I found the article below interesting, and the core question real - is what we're doing to contain the COVID19 worth driving the entire country into a depression, which in turn will destroy the lives of far more than the corona virus is projected to destroy?

Risk of a depression vs. corona virus
I said right at the beginning of this the “cure” will be worse than the disease. Apparently we are going to destroy the worlds number one economy and large chunks of the rest of the world’s too in order to stop this disease.

The fact is that it is not comparing apples and oranges. The "flu" is a virus just as much as the Corona Virus is. We just don't have an immunity to this new strand.

The other fact remains that Coronvirus has been around since the 1960's, just different strands. Copied this from a CDC report:
The CDC also says there are four main groupings of the virus: alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Within the four groupings, there are seven types of coronavirus that can infect humans:
1. 229E (alpha coronavirus)
2. NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
3. OC43 (beta coronavirus)
4. HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

There are also three other types of Coronavirus (Not considered "human Coronavirus"):
5. MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS)
6. SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS)
7. SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19)

Fact is it is something to be concerned about. If everyone does their part, this will pass just like previous bouts with diseases.

But, back to the issue of the Lake and launching. Met with Tacy (gate keeper at Bullfrog) today and they are being pulled from the stations to prevent unnecessary exposure to the NPS employees. The lake is still open but you'll have to use the kiosk until this all blows over.

God's speed to anyone that catches the virus. It's always tragic when loss of life happens.

Okay if not apples to oranges it's like saying a house cat and a tiger are both cats.....(still don't want to get bit by a tiger ;))

I hear the math percentages, but still am also hearing they don't have a good handle on how many had and have the virus NOW. It's been a long time since math, but seems to me this is a new version of MAGIC MATH..

New Mexico has 26 cases and our governor has closed all shopping malls, restaurants, gyms, salons and state parks in the entire state. NM has a proud history of electing low IQ politicians, but the economic consequences can be severe. $20 oil is really going to bury us.

Ya think what about the whole country on lockdown

Nothing magic about . 3.7 will DIE. Now you need 60% of the population to be infected to develop a Herd immunity so to speak. Take the world population of 7.8 billion and find 60% now 3.7 of that quite possibly will die. USA has a population of I guess 330million or so same math.

Hold on to your butts the world we lived in last year may never come back in my lifetime.

Mortality rate is 20 times the flue , so if 23,000 people died from the flue , this could be 460,000 . First person died today in the United States.
If the same number of people get infected, than the mortality percentage can be used to get your numbers. Otherwise, NOT.
During he 2017-2018 period, over 61,000 people died in the USA from the Flu. So far, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) virus has killed around 11,000 people WORLDWIDE!!!
Think about that.
Interesting isn't it. Here is a link to a worldwide COVID-19 report : Coronavirus Update (Live): 244,799 Cases and 10,030 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Outbreak - Worldometer
Over reaction or ? Only time will tell. Look up what Trump did during those 61,000 flu deaths in the USA in 2017-18 while he was POTUS, to plan for a future pandemic besides blaming it on his predecessor. hahahaha

I am planning on fishing out of Bullfrog starting around Apr3 for a week and I am sure hoping they don't close the park.
Timeshare houseboat and a great 19' fishing boat and a good friend who owns both.
Washing your hands a LOT and keeping your distance from others, mainly strangers, overall, seems to be very sound advice.

I'm certainly not downplaying the severity or potential severity of the virus, but I read the Spanish Flu, killed 100 mil. to 200 mil in 1918-1919, that doesn't make a stable math equation to me. The difference of 100 million seems a little abstract for my math. If I said I'll build you a house for between $ 100,000. and $200,000., how many people could I convince to buy ? Now, they say they don't have an accurate count of infections, but they have a death % ???? Not to me they don't.... JMO.

Respecting the concern and need for dialogue about the present pandemic.... Are there others that feel that this forum would be better left to discuss only Lake Powell topics? I understand that Covid-19 has an impact on all things Lake Powell, but there are certainly better forums for these discussions than this one.

One thing I have always loved about this forum, is that the majority of the time it unites us based on our shared love for Lake Powell.

The following is likely a futile request, but moderators would you consider making the choice to eliminate these threads? Many forums are managed in such a way.

Respect to each and everyone of you.

Trust me F/W
Us that have been on WW for 20 years have seen it evolve many many times.
My feeling is if it can remain civil and not get political or personal let people voice their opinion. It hasn’t always been that way here and most of those people are gone now.
YOU have a choice to read a thread or not!
Just my opinion so take it or leave it!
