Just returned from a few days backpacking in Paria Canyon and Buckskin Gulch. Great trip! Cold at first, but the days warmed up nicely as the week went on. Although these photos are not Lake Powell, they are right around the corner, and these canyons have pretty much the same geology as many of the side canyons of Lake Powell. So these shots are a pretty good idea of the kinds of scenes you might encounter in the canyons along the Escalante, or perhaps West Canyon, along with some of the narrower canyons mid-lake.

Definite similiarities.

Scenes from Forgotten Canyon’s past…

The first is from August 1992. This is the first houseboat site on the first houseboat trip I was ever on. This site in Forgotten Canyon is maybe 300 yards downstream from Defiance House Ruin, lake level 3626. For some reason, we didn’t go to the ruin! Rookie mistake. But check out that old houseboat!

The second shot is from October 1996, lake level 3679. This shot is taken from Defiance House Ruin itself, looking down. At that time, you could park a boat right below the ruin. Today, it’s about a mile hike to get from the nearest landing…
