Castle Rock Cut Filling - 2023

Does anyone know why they stopped releasing out of Flaming Gorge? It went from over 8,000 cfs to less than 1,000. If they were releasing even just 5,000 cfs, Flaming Gorge would continue to rise and the cut would fill much quicker.

They didn’t stop. It’s been 850 for most of the spring except for a “flush” they did for a weeks time, similar to what lake Powell did in April.

In looking closer at the 2nd picture it looks like there's really no serious obstructions anywhere along there except just a bit of restriction, but nothing that stands out as trouble.

If anyone can paddle through and find the highest spot and the depth that would be really interesting to know, but really, I see no good reason why they couldn't dredge out a 5-10 foot deeper smaller channel towards the middle to extend the access through by several weeks. Pile the stuff up along the edges... Sure it costs $ to do, but in the overall greater scheme of things it saves a lot more time for so many people that it would pay for itself. GoFundMe a Channel... Volunteer dozer operator, donated biodiesel, etc. etc.

Not really sure if you meant cut through the middle of the cut and set the material on the edges of the bottom of the cut? Or on the edges on top of the cut? Cutting down the middle won't help if you set the material on the bottom edges as it will take away two way traffic. If putting the spoils on top, you would have to have one huge excavator to get it up on the top.

Currently it looks like it is straight sides going up, if they took the spoils from the center to give a 50ft wide deeper cut and then gradually sloped them up on the sides yes you would lose some width but have longer access. To me some access for longer is better than none even if you only have one lane in each direction. Still, yes, optimally it would be great if they went down another 20 feet or more but that's a lot of truckloads to move out completely.

A deeper cut saves so much time and fuel for everyone that I don't see any good reasons why it would not be a priority to deepen it each off season when it is above the water line. I'd consider it a long term maintenance and enhancement project that so many people would benefit from. It's great PR to say you're improving the energy use (going green!) and making a lot more people happy. A one foot deeper cut means perhaps some people have an extra few days, which could be a weekend. A much more positive experience than going through the mixer.

It’s frustrating and interesting how the Park ignores common sense. I know they have the reasons not to extend and deepen the Cut, but that’s no excuse for not trying. If the environment is a concern, you would think that the waste in gas and emissions would be enough of a reason.
 
Monday, June 26, 2023 1:00 pm AZ elevation 3,581.3. We made it through the Cut on our PWC without having to get off and push. Water was knee deep at the shallowest point.

Marked that rockfall on the south side (right side heading from Wahweap toward Warm Creek). It’ll be ready for boats and houseboats by the big weekend for sure. Thanks so much for the report. We were hoping it would be safe for boats before our trip on the 7th. Great to hear!
 
Not sure where to put this... today's forecast has the inflow dropping below 40K on the 28th and then leveling off for a couple of days. Sure hope I can make it through with a houseboat on 7/2.
