During the late 60's, I joined a light tackle surf fishing club. We kept line class records for all the coastal fish. The rules were, you had to fish the natural shoreline using 2-12 lb test on an open-faced spinning reel. Anyway, once a year we had a 2 lb, test only Trout tournament at Big Bear Lake. From Fri until Sunday morning we all stayed in 3 cabins on the lake at Fisher Point. Sat. around noon most of the guys were fishing almost straight out from our cabins in a small area that had natural springs percolating out of the bottom in about 20 foot of water, big trout seemed to hang out in the area. It seemed to be the spot once the sun was high and the guys would anchor and bait fish, while eating lunch. One of the guys had his rod sitting on the floor of the boat, leaning on the rail while eating a sandwich. He lets out a yell, and we look over in time to see his rod flipped over the side into the lake! This wasn't your run of the mill light tackle outfit. It was a custom Featherweight blank ($70), that he had custom wrapped himself. The reel on it was a Diawa 1000 limited edition made by the Seiko Watch company ( $90). We all tried to snag for it with different heavy lures, to no avail? Everyone felt for him but, it didn't stop the ribbing and comments to rub it in and continually reminding him, "How much did that cost". The next morning at dawn we all get on the water and head our separate ways trying to find the biggest trout for the final last hours of the contest. By mid mourning we all seemed to be anchored over the springs, and soaking bait. Man it was slow, and almost no fish were caught, not even a bite! My fishing buddies rod twitches, then stops. a minute later it does it again. So he picks it up gives it a jerk and reels in. First his rod bent, then goes slack, then tightens as his hook comes to the surface stuck in a small splitshot with the line going in the water, and a 2 lb trout thrashing around the surface. We net the trout and hand line in the line going in the water and came up with the outfit lost the day before!
