Weird happenings at Powell

You don't seem like the ufo type. What did you see. My wife and I saw a strange light above the lake when we lived in Page but never found out what it was.

It came at us very fast and was brightly lit...... we were all in shock at what we were looking at, then as quickly as it appeared it turned and was gone... hard to describe unless you've been there. We saw some on the way home from Havasu back in the 70's on I10 - that time an entire line of traffic literally pulled off the watch.. that time was before you crested the hill to drop down to Indio. They are out there..... in this case we were closely watching the sky because of the Perseid Showers and it was a dark moon so there was more of a show, but this was not a meteor......

Weird stuff out there. I'm a prove it to me guy, so skeptical, but mind still open.

Last summer about mid July, my buddy and I were at the fish cleaning station at Halls cleaning our great catch (two fish:). It was very dark and looking out towards Bullfrog, a bunch of glowing debris fell out of the sky. We both thought it looked like an airline had exploded and was breaking into small pieces. It put a very bad feeling in my stomach at first. I got online and found out it was space junk falling from the sky. It was supposibly Chinese rocket body and rocket booster falling back to earth. It was a cool sight once we knew it wasn't an airline.

In 2012 early morning I saw a rocket launch. I think it was from White Sands Missile Range. This is looking SouthEast from Halls Creek Bay. Wish I could find the my video.

Back in about 2005 came across a 75' rental housboat laying on its side underwater just across from Antelope Marina fuel dock. It had pulled up to the fuel dock and tied up but the fuel people made them untie so as not to drag down the fuel dock if it sank which it did minutes later. Weird sight to see a boat that large under water.

OK, I'll chime in. Back in "86" or thereabouts, we were in GHB fishin' and decided to take a walk up the road that came down to the lake. About 1/4 mile from the water we came across a photo shoot where the clothes were optional. Very professional set up with lighting in the middle of the day to eliminate shadows. You get the idea. They were not happy to see 5 people observing their photo op.
To finish the story, we continued up the road to an abandoned uranium mine with an old Airstream trailer parked there. the whole area South & East of the mine was littered with petrified wood. some pieces couldn't be moved with a loader they were so large. Does anyone recall where that mine was?? I have looked on GOOGLE Earth and haven't been able to find it. Sq

Gosh you are old! BTW should have been here....

Alright I'll chime in with a few over the years that run the gamut from weird, stupid and funny. When my Grandpa first started going to Powell all they had was a 17' canoe with various little motors or just oars. They would go to the old Hite marina site, Farley, White, and my Grandpa especially loves the Dirty Devil area cause he could go far up the rivers, one time (late 70's I believe) after being way up the river my Grandpa and two of my young uncles started to head back only to break down, so they started paddling back and it's getting near dusk when a jet boat out of Hite came around one of the corners, my Grandpa flagged them down, tells them the situation and the guys just take off without even offering to help.

Another time in one of the really high water years (82' or 83') one of my uncles took a buddy up the Colorado in that same canoe, they went all the way up to dark canyon, pulled the canoe and did a few hours of hiking up the canyon. When they came back they found the canoe half sunk from someone throwing multiple rocks through the bottom. You'd have to know my uncle to understand this next part but he somehow like macgyvered these trash bags to temporarily fill the holes so they could paddle back to Hite.

Another time in the early to mid 90's (I'm like 7-8 at the time but I remember it well) during Farley's heyday these two guys from Grand Junction (I think half the population relocated to Farley each spring) would blast classic rock every night after a good day of fishing, this would normally conclude by about 11,12 each night. But one night Zeppelin and Steve Miller Band played almost into dawn as the truck battery eventually died after they had passed out, luckily in those days there were plenty around to offer a jump start.

Two more recent instances took place near scorup. Andrew and I took the new boat to Powell for the very first time in late October 2014. One thing we like to do at nights sometimes (especially at that time of year) is listen to the radio at night, a good college football game or our favorite, coast to coast. So this one night Andrew and I are laying there late dozing off, had listened to Boise kill BYU which was scary enough and it's just dead silent, just one of those super quiet nights. All of a sudden the little radio just starts broadcasting crystal clear Native American drum/chanting music. Nothing beyond that happened but it woke us both right up and was super eerie.

And this spring during our March trip we were camped in scorup again, we had seen like two other boats the entire trip. One night I wake up around 12:30am to my dad and Peter looking out the tent towards the main channel watching a boat cruising around. Sure enough they see our dying fire and make their way over, they get close enough and shout asking if we were so and so, our answer didn't suffice so they pull their boat right onto a rock shelf next to where ours was pulled up and two drunk guys come stumbling over to our camp. They go on to explain they are camped all the way down in Ticaboo and were suppose to rendezvous with another party at some point so they were out looking for them.... at 12:30 at night. They leave asking if we have any gas to spare and then proceed to head north up lake apparently still looking for their buddy. I stoked and stayed up by the fire till I saw them come back down the lake and head towards Ticaboo. Powell is hard enough to navigate under good conditions, let alone in the middle of the night and tipsy. It was just bizarre and seemed out of place.

Oh and we've seen two UFO's of note, one over Farley and one over Ticaboo. Powell is the best!

This is a not so light hearted occurance....Years ago, my brother and I were down working on the houseboat in the offseason, the boat was on the buoy in Bullfrog (the 400 field) when we heard two distinct gun shots. We looked in the direction of where we thought the sound came from but saw nothing. The next morning as we were loading up our tools, getting ready to head home, we saw a park ranger and mentioned it to him. He informed us that a man and his dog were found shot in his car parked at Bullfrog. The shots we heard were fired by the County sheriff as part of the investigation. We later heard it was determined to be a suiside.
......OK so that should brighten everyone's day.....

I have held back on all the death stories but there are alot of sad endings to go with all the great ones. When I worked on the lake we would say. "Murderers go on vacation too."

Not a weird happening but to us, kinda cool.
In July 2006 we were out on the lake in a 59' houseboat, 24' Sea Ray & a PWC. Just the two of us that year.
So, long story short.... A few years later I was looking on Google Earth and noticed an imagery date of 7-13-2006 which was while we were there so I zoomed in and here is the pic:

This is us. The nose is on a sandy spot with about 80' depth at the rear of the boat.

I debated about posting the Bullfrog occurance. I know there has been a lot of bad things that have happened at Powell, it is a stark and many times isolated place. I thank God this was as close as I have come to being involved in a tragic event(KOW).

I September of '14, a buddy and I were down at the Wahweap dry storage, but in the staging area outside the fence, working on the houseboat. I'm up on top working, when I catch a glimpse of a vehicle coming into the parking lot. It's the google cam van, and drove right below me. So I'm indelibly etched into the google street view, forever, or until they shoot new pics... I can't c+p that pic, for some reason...

"WARNING HIJACK COMING"

Butch, thats funny you mention Google Earth. Goldie was walking into work at the Brook Forest Inn when the Google Earth van went by mapping the streets and caught her also. Now I know 2 famous people. Sq
