Pin Anchoring

Well, thanks for sharing. This is starting to become clear. I recently read a post via Facebook that basically follows what you said is common practice for the large houseboats. In my opinion, it sounds like the guy with the money makes his own rules, irregardless of the consequences to the environment.

Sad to say that's true. I'd imagine the first people to hike and camp at the Lake weren't thrilled when the first houseboats showed up for the same reason.

This is really a mess. My personally favored solution is for the NPS to engage a concessionaire, possibly the Adonia company, to purchase any of the existing big boats that owners care to sell, place these on semi-permanent anchorages on the lake and offer for weekly rental. Like the lodges at Yellowstone, Bryce, Zions, etc. (Obviously, the concessionaire would need a crew to adjust anchoring/anchorages, clean, refuel, pump out, repair, etc.) Owners who do not wish to sell could keep their boat in the slip. Yes, these boats would still be pinned, but with far fewer holes, and many more families sharing.

The over arching theme to what I brought up is that they now allow boats on the lake that are so big that they require illegal anchoring, and a lot of the owners do not know this (or don't care) when they buy the boat.

Definitely all fair points.

The pinning issue wasn't in the sales brochure, that's fore sure. We certainly weren't thrilled about it. My point in posting was just to share my experience that for a lot of people on the boats that use pinning, they don't have a choice. Well, I guess the choice is either accept that pilot service uses pinning, or sell the boat. And once you've put X million dollars into a boat, I'd imagine most owners don't want to quit and sell over that issue.

Socioeconomic status doesn’t exclude you from breaking the law. It is unfortunate some people believe they are above the law. Lake Powell seems to draw these types of people...

As an owner of one of these boats, you cannot personally anchor the boat yourself. The insurance, in most cases, requires that a piloting service, in this case Antelope Yacht Services, anchor the boat. And the procedure for these boats is to "beach" on the sandstone, and use pins that are dropped into holes that are roto-hammered into the sandstone by the staff at AYS.
For me, the hardest part of this to wrap my head around is how a company can go on knowingly breaking the law and yet the powers that be (NPS) does little to nothing??? Do they have an agreement to $ live $ and $ let $ live?$?

I've always thought shared ownership in mooring balls placed in select bays throughout the lake would be a great idea. Sure would be nice to pull into a bay in the cruiser, clip on to the ball and be done with it.... No sand blowing around during a wind storm.. No wake zone around the balls to keep the wake boats away... win win ..

This really is a fabulous idea... It wouldn't even require shared ownership, just a reservation with Aramark. It would require them to do more than the bare minimum, however.

Let's see.... a reservation system managed by the government!!?? Assigned bays and beaches plus hours of access, arrival, departure, etc and a bay "camp" host to enforce rules, provide safety inspections and report violators. Rules for every activity and maybe life guards for swimmers. Starting to sound like real fun controlled by your caring/reliable government. There are some advantages to getting older, I may not be around for those coming attractions. Chuck

@cfulton agreed, but when I was a kid, the “fun police” (parents, teachers, actual police) seemed to show up when I was cruising for a bruising to begin with.

I mentioned nothing about the government managing the moorings any more than they manage shared houseboat .... A bouy field in Padre bay for rental houseboats would cut down on a lot of the crap (Literally) happening on the beaches,. and free up beaches for the more lake friendly locals.... just a thought to kick around instead of using it as a spring board to slam things.

What do those $$$$$$$$ocean yachts use to anchor ⚓ in open water bays and why couldn't these monsters simply anchor offshore the same way?

Seems like those water bags could be the solution for this problem. Better than allowing/encouraging pinning.

I emailed the company a few weeks back to inquire about our boat. I never received a response.

That was my initial reaction to pinning. Bouy fields in specific areas on a reservation. Just like campgrounds are now, or even lottery.

Yes! Shared mooring balls. Wonderful idea.

Ryan, here is link to their site, not like them not to answer any questions. you can also give me a call and i can give you info. Dan

Will add my two cents here. Our family has house boated approximately 40 years now and have never pinned a single time. I did not even know it existed until a couple of years ago when I heard of someone doing it. In addition to being illegal, it seems to me to be a highly unethical thing to do. I don't understand why people want to cause permanent damage to such a beautiful place and cause such damage for our kids and grandkids to contend with. We very much subscribe to the philosophy of leave no trace. We have taught all our kids that principle too.

Thanks Dan. That is the site I emailed them from.

We will be at the lake the first week of September. I'm sure I will see you and bend your ear then. Have you had a chance to use them on your boat yet?

I spoke with them and they said they have emailed you back at least twice, maybe check your spam folder.
Yes, i had one of my owners use it last week and gave it high reviews, held great in 20-25mph winds

Dan,
I looked at their website -- novel idea -- what do the large ones cost -- I could not find any pricing on their website which I always question.
Thanks
