Loved the old days at pelican lake!
Fished it first time jn 1973 when I was in high school it was incredible articles in national magazines featured it for trophy bluegill, people travelled from
All over to catch those big beauties!
I caught one that weighed at 2.5 lbs
Not sure it was a certified scale but it was a monster, I had seen a news story of a 12 year old girl who had caught a near 3lb bluegill from Utah lake . So didn’t think about state record. But I had to show my neighbor a lady who loved to fish originally from texas and she always bragged about how big everything was in texas! So I put it on a platter and took it to show her and she flipped out and asked if she could have it to show her husband as they had never seen a bluegill that big! I gave it to her the next day my little brother said you gave away the state record bluegill!
I told him the story i remembered and he said well it was never verified , I called and checked and it’s just just under 2 lbs! Im
Sure it was over 2 lbs but will never know! Neighbor said it was tasty LOL
I’m also sure I filleted a few crappie records back in the 80’s used to drive into the dirt road and find a launch in the back of The San Juan and put our small Boats in and camp and fish for Lm bass and crappie no smallies then,
We had limited space and ice in our coolers so we would release many and fillet what we could. I remember measuring 19.5 inch crappies I know they were
well over the record at the time. I told one of my good customers Dr Roberts to keep one whole and get it certified and he could get a state record and the next week he did just that and had the record for many years!
Somewhere I may have an old picture in an album of some of those, way before cell phone pics!
But the memories and pics are still in my mind!!

Pelican was an awesome lake, I had mine weighed at the post office, because I thought it was a record. It was 1oz off. Which was 2 lb 3 oz at the time.The UT record is out of Mantua lake, but what they don't tell you, is it was planted in there from Pelican lake. They took over 30,000 out of Pelican and planted them in 3 different lake's in Ut. And the record 2 lb 7 oz was caught out of Mantua after that. That along with low water ruined it in my opinion. I never saw a parasite in them, until they replanted it. But Last wild human says it is a great Large mouth bass lake again. Might have to go give it a shot this year, if I can turn the other direction away from Powell

You did better than moi...my biggest LP 'large mouth' was a gal I took there in '95

My friends were on a houseboat trip in the 80's out of the San Juan Marina. After 3 days his mother-in-law asked where she could get her hair and nails done. The trip went downhill from there.

These great stories have started me on a quest to find my old photo album and pictures I know I have from the past. So far can’t find the album which is driving me crazy but in the process I am finding boxes of old photos. Once I find it and have the newly “discovered” photos I have a project to put them in new albums (and snapping a few pics of pics, which actually turn out pretty good if you can get the lighting right) that way I can enjoy and share instead of having them buried never to be seen. May have to start a new thread on pics from the past!
I did locate some Pelican bluegill pics from an open water and ice fishing trip from the 80’s.some bass and one of the biggest stripers I landed at Powell thinking 1982 ish. Still searching for old Powell crappie pics I think they are in the album, wherever that is!

Here’s a couple saltwater bass from summer of 22 in California. Biggest 33 was caught on a Redrum Tube Bait and the 26 was caught on a Donkey Stick top water plug.
