Heading Down for a Winter Trip

Day one results, lost one while retrieving trolling (back of bullfrog in 20’ water) and landed one trolling in moki. Tried spooning in a couple different areas around the north houseboat field with no success. We suck and will try again tomorrow.
Were you seeing fish on the graph when you dropped spoons? what spoons did you try?

Don't take it to hard, Lake Powell has made a many of us think we suck, and then another day, can make you feel like a Pro. It's a big lake, and winter can be hard fishing. But the dock's usually put fish in the cooler at night, if the day is bad.
Some time's it take's a day or two, to figure them out. :)

Finally found a few today. 11 fish felt like 100 after the day we had yesterday. Started out the same, tried graphing some, tried trolling some up in various parts of bullfrog. On a whim went to Halls and for some reason kept going to the back. Started seeing trees and a steady 30’ bottom. About to had back out and we saw something on the graph that had to be fish, right near the bottom. Dropped the spoon, bam hooked up. Boated 11, all near the bottom in that 30’ depth range. Lost a couple more. ALL were the fattest Stripers we’ve ever seen. All had five/six shad in their stomachs. We got lucky, but without our persistence we wouldn’t have even gotten that far, that’s fishing. We only came away with 12 fish over the weekend but a lot more confidence and more knowledge. It was our first winter trip but it’s just the start. If these Stripers health is any indication for the upcoming year it’s going to be an epic year.

Thanks again to all the invaluable information, tips, help, and gear (thanks @Dworwood for borrowed spoons) that comes from this site. It always amazes me, other sites and fishing info isn’t like it is here.

So to summarize. Spooned up 11 Stripers, back of halls across from all the trees in 30’ water. Used kast masters and big slab spoons. Water temp was 45, weather was cold but calm. Stripers are fatter than crap.

Look at those "fat" fish ! This pics make me so jealous --
I need some "schooling" on spooning
I've tried in the past with minimal success.
There is always this year !

Can't wait to get back to the lake -- hopefully by Mid- March

If you book a week or more in advance it is $77.00 plus tax at the defiance house at least thru March. Less than a week in advance and the price goes up.
