I always leave my main down while using the kicker. Just not the other way around. Did I read that wrong?
Nope. You read it correctly. I just reread Dorados post. I was still in the mind set that we were talking about the kicker. I’m glad to know that I have been operating my boat properly, minus the mishap. And I’m happy to know I’m not the only one that’s accidentally left there kicker down. Misery loves company! 👍

Just got through eating fried Walleye from my 2nd trip of the year. Took my neighbors little brother Zack Daley, hes 17 yrs old and a senior at Emery high school. He is a passionate kid about his fishing, and never complained when it was slow fishing. He thought fishing was great, but he hadn't been on the last trip a week ago 😊. We got there Tuesday and set up camp. And got after it. But it was tough fishing, unlike last week. But we still caught his first Striper👍. And Zack was hooked on Powell all ready🤣. We only caught 17 for the day.
Day two started off good with us both catching a Striper quick, and then is was lock jaw🤣. We kept after them, and moved to what use to be Dungee islands, which went from islands to island, and now connected to the bank. But we got into the bigger Striper there and caught 27 in An hour and a half. Zack was grinning ear to ear, and I was catching the majority of them, but he was catching enough to be excited 🥳. I went and cleaned fish and had 44.
We got up Thursday to wind and rain. I ask Zack what he wanted to do, my instinct was to go home., but he said he wanted to fish 😊. I said well lets get the wet suits out, and we did. we went back to Dungees island and it was blowing pretty good, and I hooked one right away and lost him. I had told Zack with the rain and the overcast skies, that it was a walleye day, where are they at? Within 15 minutes, I caught a 20" and 3.4 lb Wally 😁. We had caught two Striper and this Walleye and needed 3 more fish for a 50 fish trip. We fished on and it was tough, I was beginning to wonder if we would get that 50 mark 😫. Then I hooked into a 2.4 lb 16" Smally, a tank. We needed 2 more 😳. Then it was Zacks turn to catch his first Walleye. He was a happy kid. We had 49 and needed that last fish to make that magic 50 mark, would we get him? It didn't look like it, but we kept after them. And finally I hooked one, it was another 3.3 lb Wally 🥳, and we were done for this fun trip.
Zack was tickled pink, and I was happy all so.
I fish a lot different when I'm alone, and can concentrate and catch more fish, but its all ways good to take a kid fishing and see that first in awe lake Powell first timer look :) . Met bigfish, Havalina, and Ryan, from WW's, all just starting there trips, and big fish had power steering trouble, hope he got going😊 . It has been a while since I’ve read a report from there, but I sure like reading yours! Makes me miss that place. Hope everything is going well with you and maybe someday we’ll get back there to go fishing.

Would love to fish with you again man. Are you still guiding? Would love to go with you some time, I know there wouldn't be a more knowledgable person to go with. Let me know if you come back to go get after the Stripers.
Have a good one Tim

I also love to clean fish but the battery operated knife is key, along with on board cleaning station the only way to roll.quick and easy
Tim Bagley who just posted, could make you change your mind about having to use an electric😁. I thought I was pretty good with a knife, until I saw Tim clean them, he is the master with a fillet knife, and you don't get that good, unless you catch and clean a lot of Striper. Tim is an awesome guy and fisherman, that can teach us all, about catching fish😊

Thanks Tim

That would be awesome! We still run our boat when the state of California allows us to fish for something. I should’ve loaded up and came back to Powell for the winter and ran trips out of there, but I didn’t know if I could make it work out financially. The tuna kept us busy this summer. Otherwise it would be pretty slow with no salmon, and they closed the nearshore rockfish down early. If you ever get the itch to come out here and do a little saltwater fishing, you should get a hold of me. Keep after those stripers they look like they’re getting fat!

Great post, I need to get my kids up there. I live about an hour from Wahweap si it's great to get out after work. Unfortunately the fishing isn't as productive. Where yoy trolling or jigging the stripers? What's your favorite technique for walleye? Do you mark them and jig them up or are you casting? I'm a walleye fisherman from lake Erie. But haven't had any luck on them here. I guess the first step is to get up north. Thanks foe sharing.

I'm casting and jigging the Walleye assassins for Stripers, and catching some Walleye and bass in with them. But you will catch more Walleye bouncing the bottom all the way back to the boat instead of bouncing bottom 2 or 3 times and reeling up, this will catch mainly Striper this time of year. And the Striper are usually far more willing then the Walleye. But I ate Walleye fresh last trip, and the next day had fresh Striper, and I like the Striper every bit as good as Walleye. And fresh to me is any thing that hasn't been frozen yet, even if its 2 or 3 days old👍.
When I told you the other day you should go into Blue Notch, I really meant it. You would probably enjoy the heck out of it with your Kayak. And If I were targeting Walleye, I would bottom bounce with crawlers. But I'm to hooked on the Striper fight to go for a slower Walleye bite😁

I completely agree, I've been pleasantly surprised how delicious striper is (fresh and they free well!) Yes Walleye and Crappie are amazing and all the saltwater fishing I've done produces some delicious fish, but striper is absolutely amazing and we are lucky to have this right in our backyard.

The bottom bouncing sounds perfect, I've been stumped because when things got tough back east we go to live minnows (when trolling, cracks, walleye assassin, etc. Aren't working) we always had live minnows to go to. Here that's not an option so between fishing where the walleye are (yes there are a few in and near Wahweap, but nothing like up north) and a worm harness on a bottom bouncer, time to bust out my homemade bottom bouncers and head to blue notch!

I did that in October. Got onto plane with the 300hp before I notice. Just as I noticed and throttled back the kicker made a loud crunching/popping noise. Started leaking oil. Apparently the kicker was Destroyed. 9.9hp carbureted merc. The mechanic in Denver said it’s almost as expensive to fix that old motor then it is to buy new and that the 9.9 is inferior to the new 15hp EFI. So I’m saving up for a new kicker.
Boats are expensive, especially when you do stupid stuff like that. 🤦‍♂️
This past December I was trolling around in the back of halls with my trolling motor and saw some much needed firewood. 🤦‍♂️ fired up the big motor and ran the boat ashore. As the boat came to shore I heard a horrible cracking sound, and said what did we hit? Looked forward and realized I just snapped my trolling motor shaft. 🤦‍♂️ We all do stupid stuff, but I learned a lot from it. I completely tore down the motor and replaced the shaft. I never knew how those motors worked but now I feel like I could fix purt near anything that goes wrong with it. Best lessons are learned hard, too bad everything is so expensive.🤣😂

Kykevin, question if you don’t mind. Looking at buying a couple of umbrella rigs and wondering, do you put any weight in line or use with downrigger?

I use 65 lb power pro braid, on a Shimano 300 bait caster. I never mind at all, its what this forum is about :)
About what depth will your setup run at, at your preferred speed? Don’t know if you remember but I met you and talked a bit at the courtesy dock at Halls a while back. You noticed my jig and I said that I was trying my hardest to imitate a setup the the crappie whisperer, being you, had described on this forum!! 😂

It all depends on the rig, and how heavy of jigs that you like. A lot of these guys are running Alabama rigs, they are made for casting, and are lighter than the rigs I am using. And some run them on downriggers, and some run with there electric motors. You will just have to experiment with them. I run a tiller boat, and I can troll much different then a steering wheel boat. I have trolled both, and much prefer the control of a tiller. I can flip a 360, and go right back through fish, much quicker than with a steering wheel boat. And I fish by myself a lot, and can do things alone, that I can't do with another person in the boat. Only problem with that is, you can't blame any one but yourself, when you screw up😂. I am running a 1 1/2 oz Capt Mack three wire rig, and all 3/8 oz jigs with Walleye assassins, instead of the Hyper Striper jigs, and they were 3/4 oz.So I just had to experiment with them for a while, ( Have lost 5 rigs so far😬) chalked it up as part of it. But the Hyper Stripers are over $5 a piece now, vs $1.50 for a good jig. Hope any of this is helpful to you, but in the end you will just have to run them and get a feel for what your running.

Thanks for the empathy on this one. There’s a big part of me that feels like I could buy the new kicker motor and do the install myself. I’m sure I’d save $500 or so. Love the guys at Crowley marine in Denver but I think they’re charging $200+ per hour.
I totally agree that messing up is the best way to learn, pretty much across the board in life!

I am the same way and didn’t know a thing. On my old boat I replaced the electric motor.

On the new boat I replaced the head unit and mother board.

Like anything, it’s intimidating, but once you dive into these things they’re simpler than you think! Unless you’re into replacing small pieces, you just have to figure out the PROPER way to get to the parts you need to replace.

I believe it’s lakeside marine that is a huge help. I have called this guys on the phone and they talk to you like you’re best friends. They’re knowledgeable and able to explain everything really well.

I put my kicker on myself, it is very easy. I had to drill out the mounting plate for the bolts that hold the motor on, but since you already had a kicker, the installation should be straightforward. Mine does not have the remote throttle, but if you already have that it shouldn’t be a complicated task.

I have found the hardest part of doing the work yourself on boats is accessing the stuff, it usually involves contortion and a lot of swearing! A kicker is pretty simple…

Nice write up Kevin and a great trip.

I think everyone that has a kicker, has left it down a time or three. My mechanic was on my boat going thru everything, when I did it the first time. He told me not a big deal, just change the oil as he told me that it forces water into the engine and contaminates the oil. So I drained the oil and truthfully it wasn't milkey at all, but for the cost of a quart of oil it is better to be safe than sorry.
