Drones

I did not realize drones were illegal at Powell. We have used ours a few times but just around our boat and camp. I am a pilot and fly into page often. Every once in awhile I take a low flight up the lake and always worry about some drone in the way. Great way to scout for parking spots before we take the boat out of the marina.

So the last three times I have flown my quadracopter, I have lost visual on the screen. I have no idea why it would do that, but it has taken some wind out of my sails. Tried it at home tonight for 20 minutes or so, and it maintained visual.

Anyone with experience with what might be going on?

Anyway, when the screen does work, it is still pretty cool.

And I used to love seeing this old Winnebago on the way from the lake. Always wanted to know the story behind it.

Taggers have really taken a lot of the "beauty" away from it......

And just a shot close to home. Colorado has greened up nicely.

@Big C thanks for the thoughts. My firmware is up to date, and I am using a iPhone 8 which is supposed to play well with DJI.

I eliminated this problem by turning my phone on airplane mode, and using just the direct-USB connection to the transmitter.

I found that the cell phone is trying to achieve connection to the tower, which is out of range, and thereby boosting the cell signal to full power and causing a great deal of interference with the transmitter.

There are also radio transmitter/repeaters placed by the forest service around the lake that might cause issues when the aircraft gets far away.

As a final troubleshooting measure, you might want to have the anntenea checked on the transmitter... (not sure how you'd do that other than to take it to a dealer or a radio expert).

If you have a DJI Phantom 3 or 4 Pro, the transmission range on those with clear line of sight is upwards of 3 or 4 miles... there's no way you should be losing connection unless there is either a tremendous amount of interference, or the antenna on the transmitter or drone aren't functioning properly.

@CHRIS MCBETH thanks for the advice. I was in areas with very spotty cell service so I will give it a try.

I have a DJI Mavic Pro. Range is supposed to be 4 miles.
