Gem Morris
Keeper of San Juan Secrets
I corresponded one more time with Mary Plumb (she is the Public Affairs Officer for the GCNRA). Here is a copy and paste of her email to me:
Thanks for contacting us requesting more information about the legality of using a hammer drill to make holes in sandstone for anchors for houseboats in Glen Canyon. We’ve updated our website with the official statement of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. After opening our website at www.nps.gov/glca, click on “I should know these things.” Then click on the fourth item, “Houseboat Staking, How should I properly anchor my houseboat on Lake Powell? Why can’t I use stakes?” Here is the direct link: https://www.nps.gov/glca/learn/news/houseboat-staking.htm
The short answer is drilling holes in rocks and sandstone inside any unit of the National Park Service is illegal... but for folks that want to know more, the website references the specific laws, reasons, and alternatives associated with this type of prohibited houseboat anchoring.
Thanks again for the opportunity to answer your questions. We appreciate your interest.
Best Regards,
Mary Plumb, Public Information Officer, NPS, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
