Basketball courts at Dangling Rope

So on a serious note, (hard to believe), been thinking about 1) the hoops being cut down 2) the hoops not being removed, IE: left there as to scream FU, see how powerful & hurtful we are? 3) and we wonder why good rational people HATE their gov't., and think/know their gov't hates them.

Does anyone know, has the Glen Canyon NPS director made any comment regarding this? She could certainly mend fences...and hoops.... :unsure:

so unnecessary......IMHO......😞

You are spot on, it’s capricious at best, and sure feels malicious. It was probably multiple people, sent all the way up there, for 10 minutes of FU. How much positive work could they have done in that day?

Excellent point..... (y) perhaps I was mistaken to first think it was the NPS....., but rationally (at least to moi) to even get to DR is arduous to say the least, and folks who would take the time to get there, typically love our lake and don't tend to be hate driven....... anybody have other evidence? :unsure:

I agree with all that, but, and this is a big but,,,,, there is always one or two lovers of our lake that think they are saving the world by doing something like this. Not hate driven but thinking that if they would cut those backboards down there won't be a bunch of people hoarding up to the DR when they are out there, just to go see or bounce a ball on the courts. A conservation type of thinking, if you will.
I'm on the fence to think NPS did this. Yes on the one side but no, because I'm not so sure they would extend the time and money to go out and do it.

So love your open minded 'outside the box' (Hoop?:cool: ) Thinking....(y) Look fwd to seeing what new evidence emerges.....
 
There have been other posts from the OP of the story that he is in contact with NPS and is holding off doing any updates out of courtesy.

Is it possible that someone other than NPS did this? Sure. In my mind it’s incredibly unlikely.

I emailed Michelle Kerns. We will see what her response is.

That would pretty much point at the DR court, funny she wouldn't come out and say it was DR. Now I'm with the group thinking as to why they felt they had to cut them off? Liabilty,,, ok for sure. But to go and lop them off and throw them in a pile is even more of a liability. Then not even cutting them flush with the ground even more so. So they more than doubled the "items" that people may get hurt on, than if they had just left them up!

My guess is she didn’t say it as that was part of my subject line in my original email question. It undoubtedly is the hoops at DR.

I’m working on a follow up email to her. The crux of which is I honestly don’t really care about the courts. It’s a very minor thing, but at best it is terrible optics. Comes across as vindictive and petty.

I’d also suggest that with absolutely everything else that NPS could put resources into (and that list is LONG) to spend money and time to cut and leave the hoops is an irresponsible act.

At some point they need to have some accountability for how they are spending the fees from the tiered boat passes.

Does anyone have an estimate of how much additional revenue that is?

According to @nzaugg several years ago, it would increase revenue by an abysmal $350k annually. Thanks for discussing this with the park. Keep us updated on what you hear back from them.

I just thought folks might be interested in a new proposal from the NPS for a tiered boat fee increase: ParkPlanning - Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Tiered Boat Pass

The key takeaways...
  • Bigger boats cause greater cost concerns for NPS and use GCNRA resources more than smaller boats.
  • The existing cost structure only allows one fee, so a fishing boat buying an annual pass pays the same as an 110' Adonia.

The e-mail mentions "administrative area". So I think the park service just doesn't want people exploring that area at all. Somewhat understandable because it will surely be vandalized. But it still seems like a fairly weak reason. The basketball hoops probably become more of an attraction than no hoops. But people are still interested in exploring abandoned buildings. So that is still going to happen whether the hoops are there or not. And worrying about safety at the hoops is dumb when you consider how many people play unattended basketball across the country every day. AND there are plenty of other ways to injure oneself at Lake Powell.

It's all just so dumb.

I understand what you are saying. But it could also be reworded “In order to keep people from possibly wrecking things (vandalizing) the NPS should beat them to it and take it down (cut it down and leave the wreckage) themselves”.
 
At least the NPS has enough money and manpower to buy a sign and have an employee put it up. It goes to show that they haven't forgotten about Dangling Rope. That road is in Government Cove on the backside of DR and it's where all the supplies arrived via barge. I camped on the other side to the left of the sign a couple times before they put in the "Do Not Enter" buoys at its entrance.

Also, what's a compendium?
