$6.06 for Ice - You've got to be kidding

About 8 years ago we took the plung and bought a Engle fridge/freezer. It hurt to spend the $700 but it Paid for itself after year 3. When you figure the cost of gas and ice and time maybe sooner. We put frozen meat and dinners in it saving room for about 7 lbs of ice. And about 6 drinks. When we take a drink out we put a new one in. There is only two of us. Nothing like opening a pop and have it turn to ice.... beer not so much.

Yeti is undoubtedly a good cooler. But as with horses, horses are worth a few dollars a lb the rest is for show. You can approach or meet Yeti performance with other coolers that are half or less the price. Yeti is the Niki of coolers and their biggest market is the environmentally busy Gen X or whatever they are now called. Too bad they've dropped their support for NRA youth shooting programs. I don't like companies that cave to fake news pressures. Oh well. Our approach to ice and powell is to give up the need for cold. We take all prepared stuff in non-refrigeration required packaging. I drop my pepsi cans into the lake on a long string and that gets me down in temp to tolerable. We do take a cooler with us with some fresh stuff at the start of a lake trip, but once we are out of ice, we go to the non refrigeration packed foods. Food is no where on our list of reasons we go to the lake, so simple fare rules. But there are only two of us so we make that compromise easily.

How far down do you drop those sodas to keep cool, and what temp do they come out at. I hiked down to the Grand Canyon and put my beers in a net, water there was 46*.

Yeti did not drop the NRA, they changed there discount structure for NRA and other companies. It's a pissing match of words between the two.

Canyon Cooler is a lot cheaper than Yeti and work as good or better. You wont catch me on the lake without a good cooler full of Ice Cold Beer and beverages. We don't put much food in the cooler.

We live out of our pontoon on the lake and carry Mountain House dry food along with Starbucks Vue (excellent instant coffee). Boil water, great hot meal and hot coffee.

...Yeti did not drop the NRA, they changed there discount structure for NRA and other companies. It's a pissing match of words between the two...
I've researched this a few times and can point to a few details and let each person decide for themselves.
  1. 2/14/18: After the Parkland shooting, David 'Camera' Hogg became one of the front men/women for a renewed push for gun control. This was backed by several leftist groups including Michael Bloomberg's 'Everytown For Gun Safety'. The advantage of having child victims/survivors shill for a cause is they are immune from criticism. Criticize them and you are labeled a monster.
  2. Wednesday 4/18/18: Two months later, 'Camera' Hogg, as he liked to be called, announced a new push to attack any and all companies that did any business with any gun companies or associated organizations. In particular the NRA was targeted with a massive twitter/email/phone call campaign to attack and boycott any companies that did business with the NRA or offered any type of support to them.
  3. Saturday 4/21/18: The NRA Foundation, a charitable organization, made a public statement that Yeti has notified them that they will no longer honor the existing discount program and relationship that had been in place with the NRA Foundation.
  4. Sunday 4/22/18: A massive #BoycottYeti pushback coalesced instantaneously from NRA supporters prompting many YouTube videos of shooting and smashing of Yeti coolers.
  5. Monday 4/23/18: Yeti, in full damage control mode, released a statement saying that the NRA claim was inaccurate and that they had simply discontinued several discount programs to a number of customers of which the NRA was just coincidentally, one of them. They also professed an unwavering support for the 2nd Amendment and a genuine love for all sportsmen and even hunters.
  6. Tuesday 4/24/18: Former NRA President and current Unified Sportsmen of Florida (USF) Executive Director Marion Hammer responded to Yeti's statement; "YETI severed ties with the NRA and is now engaging in damage control after a backlash from many of its customers. In early March, YETI refused to place a previously negotiated order from NRA-ILA, citing “recent events” as the reason – a clear reference to the tragedy in Parkland, Florida. YETI then delivered notice to the NRA Foundation that it was terminating a 7-year agreement and demanded that the NRA remove the YETI name and logo from all NRA digital assets, as well as refrain from using any YETI trademarks in future print material. While YETI is trying to spin the story otherwise, those are the facts. While Yeti can choose to run from the NRA, they can’t run from the facts."
Salient Points to consider in addition to the above numbered items:
  • The timing of Yeti's actions is miraculously coincidental
  • Of all these many customers affected by the change in Yeti's programs, NOT a single company has come forward saying they too were affected.
  • Yeti has offered not a single name of a company similarly affected except for the NRA.
  • In Yeti's statements before, during and now after the fact, Yeti has not once stated any support for the NRA, the NRA Foundation or any of the good work the foundation is responsible for. Just platitudes about supporting the 2nd Amendment and Sportsmen, blah, blah, blah. Have you ever noticed that every gun grab supporter begins their spiel with a statement of support for the 2nd Amendment?
My conclusion is that Yeti jumped on the PC bandwagon when pressured and then backpedaled at Mach Snot when the backlash became a serious public relations and financial problem. They quickly figured out that 'Camera' Hogg and his supporters already have a fridge in their mother's basement and would not be needing a Yeti regardless of the outcome.

You can decide for yourselves,
Incidentally, has anyone noticed that in recent days the left has labeled every conservative a NAZI and as such qualifies them for open public attack and ridicule. Oh yeah, and they want to take your guns.

PS: David Hogg liking the nickname of 'Camera ' Hogg is a dramatization and may not have happened. While we are at it, he does not like to be called 'Hogg Wipe' either. I believe that is some sort of camping toilet paper anyway so, well, yeah.;)

Canyon Cooler is a lot cheaper than Yeti and work as good or better.

I keep seeing this sentiment a lot. So I did a little research. No doubt many coolers are just as efficient as Yeti. But the whole “a lot cheaper” montra is over used. I think the only one that that can apply to is the ozark trail, Wal-mart version but I didn’t include that one.

Here’s six cooler companies I would consider to be in the same class of durability and efficiency, just chose the 35qt size, some only offered a 30 size and some were a 40 but it seemed the closest competitor sizes.

Yeti 35 $250 (down 50)
Canyon 35 $200 (currently on a sale for $189)
Orca 35 $300
Grizzly 40 $225
Cabelas 40 $250
Pelican 30 $240

To me that’s pretty much a wash in that range. Now canyon is the cheapest, but with all the “a lot cheaper” comments I was expecting them to be around $100 when I looked them up. This is just FYI, I had a meeting to kill at work so I casually looked them up. I would totally rock a canyon cooler, and many other brands. If I can take it to Powell, beat it up, step on it, and it keep my drinks cold then I’d use it.

Also, RTIC has a 45 size for $189, but good luck finding one in stock, or getting it shipped to your house.

Anyway, again not attacking anyone, was just curious myself.

LOL! Premelted ice is more expensive than a gallon of fuel? I load up on both before I go to the lake. Even in a pinch, I would cringe at $5.30 a gallon fuel. $6 ice is ridiculous but I bet people pay it
When your there for 8-9 days you have no choice. I bought an RTIC cooler and with dry ice and not opening it I was able to fill my main cooler day 5 with that, but all down hill after that. We had a freezer on the houseboat for a few years but the lid broke and we have not replaced it. Think I'm pushing for replacing that at our next members meeting.

I bought an rtic 90? Over the winter. Took a long time to get it (several months) but was worth the wait.

I also suggest checking out Orca. They have a really nice Instagram presence......

I am very happy with my Orion cooler by Jackson Kayak. Not cheaper, but built like a tank. I think all of the major brands are probably very good, and all similar in price range except for Rtic, which does seem to have better prices and worse customer service (IMHO). If anyone would like to test out an Orion, give me some cold beer and I’ll sit on it for a few days at the lake and let you know how it did.

This Yeti has seen 5 years of hard use. Thousands of river miles, commercial use, family use, general abuse and a few months worth of Powell time. Still looks great and works like new. Holds ice like nobody’s business. Doubles as my casting platform often (with some BIG boys). I don’t mind paying a good amount for a good cooler that I can depend on. Some will be easier on coolers and less expensive will work for them just fine. For what I do I was tired of repairing lids, outright breakage and losing ice so I dropped the cash. Never regretted it.

Extreme Cooler Chill Off Test from Sportsman's Warehouse

coolerslineup.jpg

So, here is the big question - Which one of the extreme coolers on the market do you spend your hard- earned money on? Since there are a lot of choices out there and spending the money to buy one isn't a reality for most, we here at Sportsman's News decided to give them a real-world field test to see how they perform. Some of the following coolers we have a little more experience with than others, just because some of our team members own them. However, each one of the coolers tested were brand new, current models available at Sportsman's Warehouse and we put them through the same exact testing. Features and benefits for each cooler are spelled out with each model below and the chart shows a side-by-side comparison to each.

Ice retention is a huge factor in purchasing a cooler as well as the empty weight, so we put a lot of emphasis on this portion of the test and we will let you decide which one is best for your needs. Coolers ranged between 65 quarts and 75 quart, with not all of the companies making the same sizes for the comparison. We pre-chilled each cooler the night before the test, which meant that we put two frozen gallon jugs of water in each cooler for 12 hours prior to starting the test. Every cooler in the test received two (2) ten- pound blocks of ice and then were filled to the brim with cubes of ice to eliminate any airspace in the coolers.

The results of our testing are posted below. Please take into consideration that the smallest cooler in actual measured capacity is 13 quarts less than the larger 75 quart coolers. All six coolers tested were placed on the west side of our office building here in Cedar City, Utah. The layout of this building allows for morning shade, but full sun from about 1pm through sunset at just after 8pm. The overnight low temperatures during our testing period was around 47 degrees and the daytime highs were in the upper eighties.

There was one foot of space between each cooler and measuring the external temperature of all throughout the test, the internal coolers saw no benefit from having coolers on each side of them. The coolers were opened every morning to check ice status, as well as every evening during the testing period. The water was never drained from any cooler and the testing was identical for each cooler. Complete test results can be found in the table below.

Noticed in the test the 65qt coolers did better, cheaper and that makes sense. Every time they opened a lid they let more warm air in. Larger the cooler, more warm air. To me it looks like the best value is the Lost Creek or Canyon but hard to get complete results due to different capacities.
