Marina Bum, how long is Spring Break in the Flagstaff area? I want to ski during the week at Snowbowl, but it was pretty crazy there last year. Thanks in advance.
It's this coming week so it really stated last Friday and goes through next sunday. We are hoping for another storm mid week so we've got plenty of snow for the groomers for at least two weeks or so. If you are a powder skier I'd go this week after the storm. I skied yesterday and got my fill on fresh powder and the line was not bad. Each lap took about a 1/2 hour between the wait in line, the lift ride and the run down. I ended my day with 7 runs by 12:30 and my legs were jello.

The snow was very wet stuff here in Flg and up there on the mountain too. Not to complain but the powder didn't hold a lot of air, even my powder boards wanted to sink in and once in a while I'd hit an expected soft mound and get stopped in my tracks.

Hopefully all the region (the basin) had this Pineapple Express type snow, it's full of water which could help our runoff a lot. 🤞Sadly all of this stays South of PowellIMG_6593.jpegIMG_6597.jpegIMG_6599.jpeg

The Snowbowl web cams showed way too many folks up there yesterday and this weekend will be worse. I ski mid week to avoid the mobs but this week with Spring break it may be no bargain. Still not all runs open so that squeezes the herd into a smaller space--SB has more uphill capacity than downhill capacity. Can be flat dangerous. But it's the only game in town. C
Agreed with a lot of that, Maybe we can ski together sometime? I don't think the cameras tell the whole story though.

Seriously I get my fill but I'm there by 7:30 am weekends and holiday's to beat the crowd and get great parking. I hang out in my homemade custom sprinter bus built out of scavenged old houseboat parts. I've got an old magnum inverter, a groucho couch/bed from a boatel etc. Anyway I make breakfast and stretch then get in line by 9:00. I don't ski groomers so the bump runs are never crowded and any traffic on those are from people who ski well enough not to run you over.

In my opinion If you watch the launch ramp cameras it's kinda the same thing. Yeah, the line on memorial day at 10:30 am sucks, that's why I launch before 6:00 am or I already have my runabout on the water. (solo launching before 6:00 am I also get to avoid those folks in the little hut up there)

Somehow I have become my dad, up at 4:00 am most days and over prepared in almost every way

Wow, none of the runs in your photos are groomed. Looks pretty bumpy!
Yeah, that's a paradise for bump skiers, you have to turn around them, use the uphill side of them to modulate your speed and initiate your next turn. The idea is to pick a line through the field and just keep turning following the path you picked aka your line. It's a lot of fun!

It's not unlike the old slalom water ski course where you had to make turns and it was all about angle and position to make the next ball; fall behind in one and it's harder and harder to make the next one and so on. Same principle IMG_6625.jpegMarina bum circa 1998 running a bit late on ball 4 going south at Buchli Lake, Queen Creek Az

I'm too old to run a slalom water ski course with any kind of authority but turning through the ski bumps is still very doable especially in powder; Powder softens the bumps and slows the ski down. It also hurts much less if you eat it

Thanks Marina Bum. In my younger days I skied powder, but I stick to the groomers now. I looks like I will wain another week. I appreciate your information

Same in ski racing, turn before each gate to stay ahead of your skis and the course. C PS: Been MANY years since I did any of that.

Then yeah, it's dangerous up there when they sell so many tickets and the new highs speed lifts can really stack the skiers up top. Add a lot of drunk and stoned college kids on Spring Break and it's mayhem on the Piste. I didn't ski my kids this afternoon for the same reason and I theorize that the college kids are less drunk and tired in the am so in theory it should be safer.

Did you make it to Page to test run the new boat? There is another storm coming in Wednesday through Friday.
Sadly no, we've had storms lining up like you say. It's kinda been a Miracle March as far as snow goes, finally getting some. Yesterday and today would have been beautiful to be in Page weather wise but I had work to do in my business so I decided to be responsible and make that my priority.

I'm also waiting on the hand hold inspection caps, someone had removed them and thay are missing. On the American Turbine AT-309 jet drives the covers are about six inches in diameter and are right on top of the water intake right under the boat. I can't dunk it and run it until I get those in place, it would flood the engine hold pretty quickly. I've had a bit of a hard time finding them in stock anywhere. I finally got them ordered yesterday, a marine place is having them drop shipped to me directly from American Turbine. That and a grate that protects the intake under the boat from debris on the lake.

IMG_6737.png

Somene must have pulled the one grate and both inspection caps either to inspect the impeller or to get junk out of them or both. I was told by the guy I bought the boat from that he was told one of the jets was seized up. I greased both drives through their Zerk fittings and put some oil down the cylinders before I turned them over with the starter. Neither engines had ran in a few years so it seemed like a good thing to do. Then I replaced the spark plugs and got them to fire, neither jet was seized or made concerning sounds there in the Yacht Club Yard. 🤞So far so good

Part of the reason I went up last week was to look for those inspection covers and the grate in every nook and cranny of the boat, between them and shipping it was $600 for the parts. During past projects I've found a lot of missing parts or needed supplies inside boats, I thought it was worth a try. Although I did not find those I found other stuff and learned more about its systems. Turns out I have what looks like a dry sump oil system with water fed oil coolers and twin spin on remote filters on each engine. (pretty industrial) I also found two blowers for the engine hold and two missing bilge pumps so it was a good trip and it helped me get my parts list refined.

I still need to replace the bad fuel pump on the starboard engine and get that running on the injectors, so far it's only ran on a spray can, I also still need to wire up the 4 huge Johnson bilge pumps and blowers to a new switch panel at the helm. After that and when the jets inpection caps are in place I'll be ready to dunk it.

With large jets like these you can't run them out of the water for more than a few seconds at a time. The jets are the water pick up pumps that feed the engines and I image the jets themselves are water cooled as well. On my jets ski there is a spot for a garden hose connection, these jets are much to large to be supplied by a garden hose,

So I'm not sure if I'll need another trip to get the pumps and wiring done and then another for a dunk and drive test or if I can do that in one trip. I guess it depends on if I have a helper with me and the weather and my work load here in Flagstaff. Plus the new snow at the ski resort makes me want to put some time in there, our family already has the annual passes so I'd like to see us use those. I'm hoping these storms in the region improve our runoff.

It's much warmer between the storms now, spring is definitely here! I hope to get up to Page the beginning of next week possibly, we'll see.

My favorite ski day is filled with a foot of powder on top of a nicely setup relatively steep bump run. So forgiving, so fast, so much fun!

Update: I ran up to Page and am writing this from my houseboat at Wahweap. The weather is so nice and I was able to slip away and come up from Flagstaff, it helps when you are only two hours away.

I came up to work on the tour boat in the Yacht Club Yard. I ran into a friend of mine here at the marina that I've been helping in his quest to find a replacement for his last houseboat. He has a slip already and was looking at buying a boat already in the marina and the prices were high. I was able to find him one he liked in a yard from someone I knew who had told me it was time; that they were considering selling, I connected them. It was a fair deal for both of them on a nice 16x68 Stardust. He was down here waiting to get his new boat launched and staying on a mutual friends boat, he had caught a ride and found himself without a car. His wife is coming after they get their new boat launched.

Anyway my friend is an electrical engineer, owns an electrical business and builds/fixes boats or just about anything. Since I helped him I guess he offered to help me, IDK. I sure did appreciate it though.

As luck would have it I had come up to reconnect/rewire four 1100 GPH bilge pumps, the blowers and lights and horns. I had a new panel with me since someone had scavenged the old one. All the battery cables for both engines and their Perco switches had been taken off too but the parts were there. This thing was a basket case when it came to electrical. He offered to help me, Amazing offer!

We spent two full eight hours days and since he's the Master of electrical I let him roll, I fetched tools, ran for parts and did what I was asked. I know how to do some basic 12 volt stuff. I was planning on just getting the bilge and blowers running on the motor batteries through the switches enough for a dunk test. I ended up with a three battery system with an isolator and a 3rd disconnect switch for accessories. I had most of the tools and parts but If it had I been left up to my own devices it would not have been of the same quality or complexity as my lake friends work.

I am really grateful for his generosity with me, He's a busy guy. I can see that on my own that might have taken me several weekends and would not have turned out nearly as nice. Working solo and feeling your way through is doable but being alone and climbing in and out of the boat 100 times a day would have sucked.

Now on my next trip I can reinstall my fuel canisters and pumps, my jet inspection covers and my stomp grates. Then I can flush the FI system again, test fire the motors again and head to the lake for a dunk test if time allows. If that goes well I may even leave the dock and take a lap around Wahweap bay. 🤞

Thank you Glen!

I'm really impressed with your restoration effort. The boat seems to have good bones. I sort of wonder why it was pilfered and neglected when it looks like it was quite able to continue doing its job. Maybe you'll discover why when you put it in the water! Your electrician friend did a great job taking a rat's nest of wires and neatly reorganizing them into a nice electrical system. I'm looking forward to your next report. Good Luck!

What are these parts that stick out of the transom along side the pump housings?

Mufflers. Without them jet boats are really stupid noisy. Seems really cool at first, but after 15 minutes of run time, they get very annoying. I run the Green and Colorado in my jet boat every year and attribute my deafness to straight out exhaust. NOT cool!! Say what?

This boat had only been registered as a US Coast Guard Commercial boat. I looked into trying to update that in case I wanted to ever sell it onto a commercial operator and the cost was exorbitant with back fees since it was last registered in 2010.

AZ Game and Fish at first said that registering it would be no problem but then a lack of a discernible regular Hull ID number threw a wrench in things, it's only got a serial number from the maker. I ended up having to get an officer from AZGF up to Page to inspect the boat and make a report. After that I was assigned a new hull registration number and then I could register the craft and get my tags. With that I was able to obtain insurance and lastly now I can overpay GCNRA on the new tiered annual Canyon Pass fee schedule giving the Feds the extra proceeds to probably piss away somewhere else. (not here at Powell, Grrr) But, I'll be legal, Gotta love dealing with the Government! At least it's done.

Planning on getting back to Page this weekend to take advantage of unseasonable good working weather and to tie up some loose ends on this boat, getting close to a dunk test
