Last week, coming out of Moki, a woman was swimming (without life vest) midway across the opening of the canyon. She was with a rental houseboat parked on the rockfall in the pic below. She had decided to swim to the other side and back. Google lists it as 205+ yards. So, she was 100+ yards from either shore. When I came around the corner heading west (looking into the sun) I didn't even realize the volleyball-sized object on the surface was a human head and went past her.
After I realized what was going on, I went back and checked on her. She said she was fine, but had obviously run out of energy. I stayed with her until she got back to the houseboat. She tried to "let me go" several times, but I explained that the area was prone to high traffic and that without a more visible profile (like a boat) she was in danger of being hit. I'm not sure she believed me, but I stayed with her just the same.
