San Juan Marina- We found it

Back in 2007 I was living on the Navajo Nation in Kayenta and explored quite a bit up around that old marina. I had purchased the Floating Hogans book from the manager at Dennys in Page. Believe it was the author. Its hard to believe that a LearJet could land on that road coming out of Oljato. Remember that part in the book? I spent alot of time looking for the road/trail mentioned in the book that connected that area to Navajo Mountain and dont believe I ever did find the whole thing, although Im sure I picked up some of it closer to Navajo Mtn. I remember the old NPS sign at the top of the ramp back then, otherwise it was pretty overgrown. Somewhere out there is also a 17 (or so) foot long snake petroglyph carved into the rock. Its there, but no one at the time was willing to give me any hints on its location. I really enjoyed my time working in Kayenta for Eagle Air Med and often wish I was still there. Its a rugged and beautiful area to live in.

Regarding mismanagement of funds.......the Chinle airport used to be unpaved and rutted. It was moved a couple miles south, paved, and lighted. But there wasnt enough money for all the runway lights. What happened to the money? My guess is its the same thing that happened at UNI.

Eric, I am envious that you got out there to explore. Thanks for posting the photos too. One day I would like to make a trip starting on the SJ river at Mexican Hat or Bluff, portage around the falls and have a friend or family meet up to finish the trip out on the SJ arm. Would be a nice long adventure. I usually raft the SJ river each spring and have been up the SJ arm to the great bend. I'd really like to connect the two.

Here is a side canyon just above Oljeto Canyon on the SJ from March 2019SJ-123.jpg.
