Good call. I bought our 24' Regal Deckboat at the bottom of the recession for $10k. If you can find an older boat that was very well maintained, that is always best.

There is a 240sd in craigslist flagstaff, low hours, stored in Page, 6.2 l, $35000, good luck

Those 2008 and newer Mercs have DTS, digital throttle and shift, which is shift by wire. They sure have a nice feel to them.

The bow area is probably 6 inches bigger, but it would be hard to claim that you are moving up to a larger bow seating area, because the 240 is so delightfully big up front.
The gas tank on the 270 holds 85 gallons, up from 65 on the 240. That's never bad on a big lake. And, with the 270 and 496, you can pull a fat slalom skier out of the hole pretty effortlessly with 8 people on board and a full gas tank. That impressed me. You need 22 pitch Bravo three props at Powell.
The problem with the 270 is that there weren't very many made. I bet the 240 was made 20-1 over the 270. So, finding a low hour nice fresh water boat is more of a challenge.
Also, A half ton will tow the 240 all day long, which is about 6300 on the trailer without gas, but the 270 is over 8000 with the trailer. Effortless for a diesel, but you feel it more with a half ton. On the flats, you are fine, but up and over Eisenhower tunnel you will be gasping for air.
Do you remember what props you ran on the 240? And outdrive ratio by chance? Mine has the 2.20 drive ratio and is running 26 pitch props but if i remember right, on the test drive i could only get 4k rpm completely empty boat and tank with 4 people. I can get a set of 20s but im afraid thats too low.

I run 22 pitch in Denver and at Powell. Each two inches of pitch is good for about a 350 RPM change, even though the dealer rounds it to 400. So, if you are at 4K rpm with 26 pitch, which sounds exactly right, then 24 pitch would get you to 4375-ish, and 22 will get you to 4750.

Both the 350 and 6.2 make a ton of horsepower above 4000 RPM, and by letting them get up there, you unleash a nice top end.

Here's one of my favorite graphs. For fuel flow efficiency and max MPG on long cruises, those motors like to be from 3200 to 4100 RPM. Ignore the MPH or knots column, that changes with flatter pitch props.
