If you have a remote you can track back with the trolling motor. Also the Humminbird and Minnkota talk to each other and can get you back. Just read the 200-300 pages of the manual, simple right. Or you could toss a marker.

Setting waypoint and spot lock are pretty basic Functions. May as well go back to piece of string and Rock for depth finder , Fred flintstone just trying to help, those annoying electronics can help you catch more 🐟 if you want to, or you could just toss a bouy

When the school wanders off will sidescan tell you which way they went?
Or does the boat have to be moving for side scan to work?

With my limited experience with side scan? I do not think you can tell which way they went after they leave the screen. Those that know more about electronics can chime in here. My normal approach when a school departs from my sonar and down scan is to cast out in different directions to find another cooperative fish. Hook that one and the others will follow. Don't give up when the school leaves, just widen your search. If the school does not return then crank up the big motor and look for a new school.

the newer minnekota terrova is awesome for jigging schools, with spot lock on and you see on the sonar the school getting weaker, hit the jog feature right left front back, if signal gets weaker go the other way, this all quick and easy on the remote fob. really a game changer, and the new spot lock is fast to aquire and holds strong.

I have an older unit and in a steep canyon next to a wall it will lose the GPS signal and start to go where ever it wants. Are the new units the same or do they hold the spot.

I have 2018 it does pretty good but then it will go crazy!

in the canyons they still use gps and if signal is blocked they wander. the new units with the heading sensor will spot lock very fast , old units took 20-30 seconds to start and over shot etc,, a real problem in wind. I upgraded last year and very happy with new design. my gps screen in the canyon shows what's going on with blocked/weak signals, it will show the boat bouncing all around in the canyon.

Bobco, did you have to replace the whole trolling motor?

As I have the older Ulterra and the spot lock is very temperamental as well as the autpilot.

unfortunately yes, it is a whole new unit. new units include a blue tooth heading sensor puck. not sure about Ulterra though?
does it have the heading unit?

"Vintage" generally isn't an adjective you want associated with a trolling motor, but that's what I got :). In the meantime, I'm recruiting my teenage son to rig it to an Arduino microcontroller and see what kind of magic can be done with it. Should be fun.
A whole new system would be great but I've already depleted my boat funds this year (coupled with another kid starting college) so I'm going to have to hold off...

Bobco, no heading unit. I was afraid I would need a whole new unit.

And that cost is not on the table as I only bought this a few years ago. Minn Kota could very easily offer a replacement head unit but they are too greedy....I heard they did for a short time then stopped.

They are as bad as Lowrance, next trolling motor is not going to be a Minn Kota as I have had it with that company, A shame most of the companies in that space have the same practices, would be nice if someone would come along and change things.

Anyway probably just wishful thinking.

Try changing your heading setting on your graph. Change from "North Up" to "Heading Up" this will make navigating to your way point much easier.
We struggled with the same thing until I watched this video on you tube. Watch it until the end it is Tip #3.

Perfect! That’s a great tip. I’ll definitely give it a try next time (probably next weekend).

Made that change the first 10 minutes using them....as I have had close to 10 units over the years.
