Questions about the San Juan

We always found wilson to have the most flat ground. Which in the San juan doesn't mean much. There is not a lot of beaches or flat land down that way

How is the area around Cha and/or Wilson creek for tent sites with reasonable shelter for an anchored boat?
Wilson Creek at this water level is mostly slickrock - so if you don't mind tenting on top of slickrock on not quite flat ground it is great. Shelter is great - the only issue with anchoring is if inconsiderate boaters drive by with a big wake as your boat is anchored to the rocks also. Most of the time boaters have been considerate when I've been up Wilson, but there are a few.........

There is one sandy beach at the mouth of Wilson - this time of year better chance it will be available.

We’ve run our 21’ Ranger Reata from Cha to Bullfrog in 1-1/2 to 2 hours several times to pick up, drop off guest during houseboat trips to the SJ. It’s worth it! It our favorite spot on the lake
Powell Bride... how long does it take you to run your houseboat down there?

Our houseboat cruises around 8 MPH. It is a long ride down, burning a lot of fuel. But the ride down can be part of the fun.

On our way back last year it took us all day. We were down one engine, and the remaining engine was giving me fits as well. It took two hours from the time I turned the corner and could see Bullfrog, until I arrived at the fuel dock. That part wasn't very fun.

Pretty rough believe it or not. This time of the year though you should be fine. As stated, Anchorage can be tough. I usually check the left side of the mouth of the San Juan as I am heading up as a backup plan in the summer months as a
Precaution and move up from there. There is not much at all until Cha. Cha has a few, and you will find a random site here and there and I have had some luck in Deep with some rough but workable sites. Next sites really are up in Paiute. Then again I only choose sites that are very well protected from the weather.

Could you share some tips for a newbie beach camper? I know to avoid beaches facing lots of water. Do the summer storms generally come from SW so I would want a north facing camp? Thanks!

My wife Amy and I were staying at Lake Powell Resort in Wahweap and headed to San Juan ((Reflection Canyon was our actual destination but we figured San Juan was worth a look).

In our new boat at 55mph it took about 75 minutes to get up there and we burned 2/3 of a 55 gallon tank.

On the way back, we stopped at Dangling Rope to fill, then drove back to Wahweap at 34mph around 3400 RPM and barely burned 1/4 tank.

So speed obviously has a dramatic impact on how far you can go. And after Dangling Rope, $200 of gas now has a dramatic influence on chosen speed LOL...

We towed our steel hull SkipperLiner with our speedboats from the mouth one year! That was fun...not. Took us 8 hours from the mouth
