Sorry you have to deal with this, esp. when a Lake Powell vacation is supposed to be relaxing, fun, safe and non confrontational..

If you could post anything you feel comfortable with here, as these first lawsuits will provide a legal 'precedent' that may be followed and impact our lake for years to come.

Everyone should know their rights and responsibilities, IMHO.....and this obviously will play out in the courts. As new regs come down, all LP boaters will need to comply.....even us....:cool:

I listened to a podcast about 2 years or more ago, it was about fishing/hunting and conservation. I guy a really like Steven Rinella, was the host. He was talking about this issue on smaller lakes in the midwest. They were talking about studies showing how all these lakes have been effected in large ways by these wakes. How thy have lost their vital fish breeding and nursery area (shore protected weed areas), how the wakes are effecting everything from the dragonflies to the mosquitos, dang ol butterfly effect... He is a very nuanced guy in my opinion and holds the opinion that we all have the right to recreate on our public lands, but responsibly and in a way that allows our grandkids to enjoy it more than we get to. Anyway, I was shocked to hear and realize all the issues. I had not thought about surf boat wakes other than rocking my boat if you get my drift. They had outlawed them from a few lakes back in Wisco already ( I think it was?) where the impacts were large. They acknowledged the property damage too, but the environmental damage was what made me think surf boat days of having their way in ignorance are numbered.
Its the same problem on repeat, we all have the right to do what we want, problem is others and nature are effected even if you don't care or know.
 
The erosion of shoreline will get Wake Surfing banned, the Environmentalist are just rallying about this, there is going to be a lot of people upset that they $100k plus boats for a single purpose that are useless.
 
I liked this web site better when we talked about fishing, and had pics of good times. I know there are plenty of problems out there but it's like watching football and trying to get away from politics. Hope that everyone has a great rest of the summer, be safe and respect other peoples time on the lake.

Rick, I so get what you're saying. I too long for simpler and more care free times, and at 67, I remember quite a few...... :cool:

I'd suggest tho, that we live in strange, unprecedented, complicated times, where everything's connected, and discussions about how to move forward are useful.

Politics created our lake, and ultimately politics will determine it's, and our fate. 'Fill Lake Powell' is a case in point.

What I love about WW is being able to listen to, learn and grasp wordlings well thought out theories & ideas for the future.....WW is the best forum I've found for folks who know and love our lake, and want the best for it now, and for future generations.

Also, we have the option of only following threads we chose too, like channels on a TV.

Sometimes we want the unvarnished news, sometimes not....

Just one boater's opinion of this great site......:cool:
 
A jerk, is a jerk, is a jerk.. no matter what wheel they are behind. Common courtesy is getting less and less common everywhere, let alone at Powell. I had more issues with houseboats this August trip than I've ever had in years before, and it all boiled down to simple courtesy or a lack of boating knowledge. I have a surf boat and absolutely love taking it to Powell. I hate the surf waves in camp as much as anybody. We don't surf in the canyons, channel only. For the life of me, I can't understand why anybody would want to tow their friends or kids in such a narrow place where a collision or run-over is so likely. Before it was surf boats, it was wakeboarding, tubing, and pwc's in the canyons.

It sucks you had this experience on your trip, we are all there for the same reason, to enjoy the greatest lake in the West.

Amen to the fishing part, the fishing input has probably dwindled by 80% since I first joined. Your football/politics analogy is a bit apples to oranges though. Lake Powell (especially with low water issues) is a much more complicated and naturally political discussion than just expecting to watch football and seeing some demonstration etc. etc. (which, like you, football is all I want too).

I guess more people now (myself included) can relate to an interaction with a "jerk" than most can relate to finding the right size of "jerk-bait" for Stripers. You can find both here (discussions, not the jerks, who are few and far between and one reason this site is legitimately unique and special) and this site is priceless. I'll do a better job myself of focusing on the good and highlighting our trips with more pics/videos again.

We tend to focus on the jerks as thats what we talk about. But there are way more amazing people at Lake Powell than jerks. I would say its one of the places that makes people happy and attracts good down to earth folks. I love the people of Lake Powell and the jerks are a very small minority. Most of my trips are filled with great interactions, its rare to get pissed off at someone.

Why hesitate? It’s great information.
 
We had the boat out for almost 2 weeks, in a small inlet. It looked bigger until you got in the little inlet, so it was common for boat and skis to come looking.

85% slowed down and did the right thing, but that meant that we had a couple per day that had NO clue or did not care. Boats so close to swimmers off the back of the boat that they were waving things in the air to keep from getting run over, and a jet ski that came in at full speed turned ~ 10ft from my tied up little boat that the jet wash went over the bow and sprayed my houseboat. I have been done this a long time so no damage to my boat with the huge bumpers I have...

My point is this, most people/boats do the right thing so don't let the few that eat to much jerky get you down. ;)

We did have a houseboat that was looking for a spot and the little inlet there was NO beach and not an good spot for another HB. However, it was getting late and they seemed lost, so we went over and helped them anchor up the best they could. I did not want the "dinner and a show" to damage my boat later in the evening when they lost anchor... :) My 16year old taught them about anchoring and tying up a houseboat...
 
It all comes down to 3 words-

THEY DON'T CARE!

Its no different over in St George at Quail Creek or Sand Hollow
At Sand Hallow I can give them slack but they inundate Quail Creek with surf boats and drive everyone else off the lake and shore and
THEY DON'T CARE!
No repercussions= no change in behavior
They are all arrogant and self centered period. Haven't seen one yet that is courteous.
 
Until the proper authorities start doing their jobs these wrongs will continue. I have sent pictures with the boat number plainly visible and the reply I got back was "we will watch for them on the lake." What a crock, I had offered to travel to testify with numerous witnesses if they would just cite this individual. This will continue until fines are handed out. These boaters just don't care, they have no respect whatsoever.
BTW the last few years have been the worst I have seen in over 40 years of boating, camping and enjoying Lake Powell.

I love that idea of wake boarding in the main channel only, or think of this wakeless in canyons when you are out of site of the main channel or after the first 500 yards. Wouldn't that be great.

The name of the offending boat is appropriate here, cause your price is a huge underestimate. Was at the Mastercraft dealer in SLC a couple weeks ago and the cheapest boat on the floor was $176000. The boat my wife liked was $240K, with more than one boat well over the $300K mark. Salesman said they are about 5% under the Malibu prices, while the HeavyD salvage boat was over $400K.
I'll be keeping my 20 year old skiboat till the day I die. No ballast, no tower speakers, no cruise control, no payment.
I've been on the receiving end of the wakes while at Powell more than once, but also on the other side. At Pineview we had found the only wind protected spot to ski with the scouts and had been in the area for at least half an hour, when someone came in and threw an anchor exactly in the middle of the wind shadow such that we couldn't stay 150 feet away without hitting the shore, or being out of the in the calm area. After about the 20th pass of us skiing they finally realized we were not yielding the only smooth water and would continue skiing, so they moved.

Great information! We’re a dual activity family…avid bass fishermen and avid recreational boaters. We love Powell! There are two flaws with the study (I’m a specialized statistician in my line of work). First, after reading through the the study, it’s quite apparent that the goal of the study was to only prove that waves from boats is no different from natural waves. Data points are narrow in scope and ignore data from a wide range lake depths, shoreline slope, aquatic impact, etc. Second, cross data analysis using multiple models prove the intent of the study. While CFD is a good statistical model, it doesn’t tell the whole store, just a slice. I appreciate their attempt to justify wakeboard boats, but you can never take stupid out of an ignorant boat driver. For the avid fisherman, it’s a significant issue and for casual recreational boaters, it’s certainly an annoyance. There is a place for them on lakes and many of them are awesome at respecting others, but for the 20-30% who don’t, they just may find themselves tied to a lawsuit. I’ve taken on a lot of water because of knuckleheads coming within 75’ of me while fishing. It is very frustrating when my 7 and 3 year old grandsons are with us. Just keep in mind that statistics has a lot a dirty little statistics if the statisticians lack trying in modeling methodologies.
