one week on the San Juan

Yeah I get that, will be leaving from Wahweap at first light and will have a long travel day. I will not risk getting close to our destination at nightfall, but 10 hours should be enough travel time to get to Wilson putting us there around 4 pm.
Don't forget the waterfall in Wilson!!! Great pics, nice cool pools in the heat and the kids like sliding down the moss covered falls!!

Did not know there is a waterfall. Do you have to walk up the creek bed a ways or is it right there where you park the boats?

Paiute is the bomb. If Gary Yamamoto said Paiute is his favorite place to fish on Powell, that is saying alot.

I am ready for our one week trip to the San Juan from may 18th to the 25th except don't know the area that well. Will be on a houseboat pulling 3 fishing boats. Have been up the San Juan enough to know sandy beaches are not a common sight. Last trip we stayed in Oak Bay but really want to hit some new country. Trying to find a beach that will accommodate us. Are there any places off the main channel by the mouth of the river that can be recommended . Of course all the normal requirements are needed, wind and wave shelter being #1.. don't want to go to far uplake or up river cause I know we will have to go to D.R. at least once. Thanks for any suggestions

Good advice here. I agree with Wilson Creek but sand all depends on water level. I've camped on a beautiful sandy beach in Cha as well, but it's not quite as protected from the wind. Another great possible option is the small canyon just beyond Wilson (called Shoot the Chute in "The Author's" book) which may have one sandy spot. Any hiking, or just fishing? The Rim Arches is an excellent hike. I can give fairly detailed directions and parking instructions if you'd like.

Thank you for your service Eric. 7 hardcore fishermen so no hiking on this trip but will check out the small canyon beyond wilson.

Well, in that case, there's about a 3.5 lb. smallie in Wilson Creek that stole my Yamamoto twin tail a couple of years ago. If you could "contact" her I'd appreciate it!

Birdsnest, I follow your projected travel plan every year from Wahweap to Great Bend, and your travel time is good unless you hit horrible weather.

Three summers ago,we departed APM early en route to the San Juan in my big/slow (OK, it CAN go fast, but at great expense!!!) cruiser - just my wife and I. We got up to Wilson Creek around 3 p.m., no storm, but a steady 15-20 mph south wind, we could not find a beach anywhere in the vicinity that we could get in to (we can't anchor into slickrock like a HB can) - searched in the dinghy for a couple of hours, had a vapor lock issue on the cruiser that just about ended with us being blown into rocks (another great story for another time....), got the boat started and cruised back to Oak Canyon and found a nice beach at dark - lucky as I know there are plenty of whales in Oak! Not a fun day, but could have ended much worse!

It sounds like you'll have more help and will be in a houseboat so anchoring options will be better, but definitely leave Wahweap as early as you can to allow for options. Sounds like a great trip!

Planning this is so much fun! We had an experience last year trying to find a spot by the mouth of the SJ that ended in Oak at dusk also. Hoping to leave stateline by six with all the fishing boats in tow.
