Old stuff in the San Juan

Tiff,
Not to diss the wild Redhead, I have them both, But Lake Powell Tales is a must read! The Petester's stories are the lake from the beginning! Are his tammie trees stories, and other youthful experiences still out there somewhere? RIP, My Friend.
I agree.

We had a Stan Jones map, showing the San Juan Marina, and a "proposed marina" near Spenser's Camp. Before we left the Bullfrog area we asked several employees if the "proposed marina" on the SJ was open. When they said yes we excitedly launched our campaign to talk my dad into taking the houseboat to it. Little did we know that previous versions of the map had designated the SJ Marina at Paiute Farms as "proposed". Needless to say we were quite surprised when we rounded the Bend into Spencer's camp and there was NO dignof a marina. By then we were low on gas and had no choice but to go all the way to the SJ Marina. Our one and only visit to it while it was open. Personally I hope they never open a marina on the SJ, we value the isolation it currently offers

Same here, I think the SJ should remain in it's current state.

What year was this in??

It could have been 89, but I don't think earlier than that - the family started going to Powell in 86. I remember telling everyone in our group "Buy your souvenirs that say San Juan Marina now, cause I promise we'll never see this marina again" I had no idea how prophetic that would be. I still have the trivet I bought and my Dad still has his T-Shirt. Refused to wear it for years "cause he couldn't replace it".

Oh my gosh!! That is actually the coolest! Do you remember at all what bay or spot up the San Juan it was in?

Chase - Welcome to the site. You will find all the information you could ask for here, and lots of folks willing to share their knowledge.

The marina was in Piute Farms Wash. If you go to the map on the site of Fred's liquor store, theres a pretty cool map that shows details of the lake and you can see the bay where the marina is located. http://fredsliquorstore.com/uppersanjuan.html

You made me curious so I went looking through old photos (the old fashioned, pre iPhone kind) and found 2 not great pictures I took when we pulled in for gas. It was September of 1988.

I have to say I like your taste in areas of Interest. The San Juan is our favorite part of the lake. With the lower lake levels, in the past 10 years we have only been as far as Nokai, but most years we don't even venture past Alcove Canyon on the Great Bend. I'm not anxious to find a rock with my prop when we're that far up. It's pretty isolated.

I will say I am almost glad the marina is no longer in operation, and that a marina was never build between Nokia and Copper. I like the lack of boat traffic and isolation that you find on the San Juan due to the lack of services up that way

OH MY GOODNESS! THANK YOU SO MUCH. Honestly, I have been looking for about a year to find ANY sort of visual evidence that this place existed! Its not just a legend that my dad has spoken of! thank you!!!!!!! and wow! i love those pictures! i feel the same way, my love for the san juan is driven by the fact that it is so remote.

Omg! I so loved Piute Farms...we, living in Mexican Hat, started going there in 1979 as it's only about 35 miles away! Of course, that was long before the marina was thought of...the water was so beautiful, clear and pure glass! There was rarely anyone else there...I remember the marina, too...we played music for their 'grand opening' and took a houseboat out a few times (3?) before they closed it due to the 'mud monster' and even worse, people were getting robbed of all their booze by the cops on the way in! Lol...
What great memories and pics!

Nope, you’re dad wasn’t trying to josh you, not this time.

Hope to see you on the Juan one of these days. I love meeting wordlings on the lake.

I loved the SJ enough that I got married on it. Wilson’s Creek
