Need help! San Juan Planning

I'll be heading to the lake this Sunday through Wednesday. Plan on heading up to Good hope Monday. If the water is too muddy I'll be heading to the SJ on Tues and Wed. I've always had great time fishing in the SJ. Never been blown off the lake or seen any Crocks. There can be floating debri and there are a lot of whale rocks to look out for in front of Cha and Piute. But it's worth the trip!. I use 40 gallons to go down and back in a day and fish all around with a 21' Triton and a 225 Merc EFI. I have to keep the RPM around 3500 - 4000 and take 2 extra 5's just in case. Hope to see some of you out there!

Jimbo

Is this the west wall to the north of the bay?
Yes it is. I think it will be well under water this year in August when we arrive.
We nicknamed it Jack Rabbit cove because of the white calcium deposit up above on the cliffs that look like a rabbit.

Don't worry TR, I thought it was the cove were the A is in placement on the picture.

Just to many great places on the SJ

For those down this weekend, please report back with what water temps you were seeing and water clarity, etc. I think we are headed down the week of the 17th if the weather is going to be good.

Yes the W does blow like no other place on the lake. When you go through the narrows between bays you might see almost glass water and when you make the turn to the next straight you will get blown away tell the next straight. There are days when the W and rain is bad and the next day sunny and hot. There hasn't been a day that we don't get to fish most of the day.
as many times that I have be on the SJ, it still gets me how the wind can change directions with each turn you make. From glass to big waves. One of the best day I had ,it was raining and hailing off and on. I caught at least 80 fish on top water. James and Tom got another 80 between them. I was using a Bass Pro top knocker. Never worked that good again. When the water is colored I use dark colored stuff.

You guys are great. I read all the information about the "Juan". Really good stuff. We'll be there on Tuesday. Looking forward to some awesome fishing.

Tuesday to Friday morning. Flying out this morning, from Oklahoma to Vegas and meeting my buddy. We'll be in a Lund style boat. I think it is grey and aluminum in color, about 17 feet. I saw that you'll be in a houseboat. I don't think we'll be going back real far into the canyon. But we'll look for you.

We won't be to Wahweap till Friday afternoon and heading up lake Saturday at first light. We will be in my brothers boat a green Lund.

Good luck and please post a report.

Hey Dungee,
You are going to love San Juan. I am in a Trophy Bayliner with a 175 HP outboard. My tank holds 82 gallons. In four days I use about 84 gallons. I usually take an extra 20 gallons with me to make sure we get back. I'm sure the bay by Neshaki will be darker, but will still be fishable. Good Luck to you!

Any one ever take a houseboat all the way down there... How much time to the mouth of SJ arm?
Fuel... can do the math but looking for anyone with experience to talk to a bit. Thanks

I've gone to the San Juan a number of times with a houseboat. Time and fuel used are very dependent on the boat and how you drive it.

One trip was with one of the old rentals. Pretty sure it took over 12 hours to make the run.

One trip with. 60' aluminum monohull with twin 5.0 I think it was about half that time (not towing any boats).

Efficiency of your engines, what you are towing, how hard you run the engines, and if the "w" is blowing all will have a major factor in time and fuel consumption.

Yep - I remember it taking 12 hours on a 50 footer from Wahweap. Didn't go too far upriver but the fishing was phenomenal.

Ryan, I just wanted to clarify this was from Bull Frog and is the 12 hours one way or is it both ways?
