Need help! San Juan Planning

The Juan is a long way and very remote. That is why I go there. Most of the folks I have run across up there are like-minded folk and I really appreciate that. One of the things I really appreciate about WW is that I get an idea about who will be where when I am at the lake. It is nice to know a friendly face in the middle of nowhere and know that I can help someone if needed and vice-versa...because I know who else is there. IMO this is important in remote areas of the lake. It is also nice to meet up with folks and check in. WW facilitates this, as all the above threads show. I spend a lot of time in the Juan region. There is amazing fishing and so much of it. Campsites not so much. Preston and I are both boat campers and that makes it a little more difficult up there. Houseboats have a much easier time finding sites. If you are heading up there and boat camping you have to start making mental notes of what is available for tent sites from the mouth up. I always rest easier once I have a protected and somewhat flat camp site. I also try to know who else is in the area when I am there, or talk squirrel into going lol. If you are prepared, it is a wonderful place that sees little traffic, and almost none of the traffic I don't appreciate. That is why I love Ryan's report and would love to see that make national news!

If you're headed to the SJ from the north, about the best reception I receive anywhere on the lake (Verizon) is at Hole in Rock. My phone starts to go off with texts, emails, and missed calls as soon as I get near that area. When I pick it up it has full bars of LTE service. Go figure.

It is an awesome place to go fishing, hope your taking that awesome little fisherman.

Always! It is amazing to see how much better he gets each trip, he went from last spring to not having a hook to me putting on a Gamakatsu hook on for him this last trip. He has great depth perception on casts and is doing well on different reeling speeds, fast, medium and slow. I've been slowly introducing the jigging action as well. Its awesome! He still needs a Largemouth to complete his grand slam, not bad for a four year old! The three rods he's "dropped" into lakes have been worth it. ha

Yes the W does blow like no other place on the lake. When you go through the narrows between bays you might see almost glass water and when you make the turn to the next straight you will get blown away tell the next straight. There are days when the W and rain is bad and the next day sunny and hot. There hasn't been a day that we don't get to fish most of the day.

From TR "I also try to know who else is in the area when I am there, or talk squirrel into going lol."
Goldie & I plan to be at the lake 4/18 thru 4/22 We will be at the BF campground and keeping the boat in a slip. Sq

We are certainly familiar with heavy run off and crazy conditions, heck we even put in at Hite last year... The debri and changing conditions dont bother me, I just want to get an idea of just how dirty it will get or be and where around that time, questions and answers that unfortunately have a lot of variable. I guess my follow up question is if all of Neskahi is unfishable is the rest of the San Juan below it worth the trip? The Escalante is certainly not a horrible plan B.
Oct is really a good time to fish the san juan, these spring winds can screw things up.

The San Juan has always been awesome, hope they get the house boat running right so I am not afraid to take it up there. Right now I I am afraid to take it past Warm Creek in case we break down. Makes it a long run in the bass boat, I have done it and stayed the night but prefer the comforts in my stage of life.

Hey Kevin we are heading down this weekend and are really debating on bombing down to the SJ we will be coming off Monday....What boat will you be in?

This area has a lot of flat area to tent camp. But you area more exposed to the W.

The water level should be up from the photo and the hill on the left should be an island.

Thanks waterman, I rarely get up that high at the times I go there, trying to avoid the north runoff. The few times I have there have been people camping there and that has kept me from nosing around much? I'll keep that one in the back pocket though for later times in the year. I believe the pic from Jimbo is the far end of Cha bay, along that wall, to the right facing upriver?

I agree on the best reception with Verizon. From what the NPS tells me, after the entrance to Great Bend, there is no good cellphone signal. We ran into a ranger a few years ago that was on a search and rescue mission for a missing boater up around Zahn Bay. With no communication up to there, they were not sure where to begin looking for him. I can still get reception in the large bay just before Great Bend as long as Navajo Mountain is in site. My friends daughter even signed up for college classes on her laptop while floating in the middle of the bay on the ski boat.

Kevin, I will be down with my brother and good friend. Going to be in a 22ft. silver/black Crestliner. I'm having a hard time deciding weather to go down that far with this front coming through. I've never been down there and I would really like to check it out, but It's a long way to go if the fishing is going to not be too great not to mention the W forecast for saturday
