For years the management of Glen Canyon has been trending downhill, never has it been as poorly run than it is today. Here are a few grievances, let me know your thoughts:
1) The 1/4" braded wire that is anchored to the canyon wall at the entrance from the main channel to Rainbow bridge. It’s used to suspend the floating buoy in at the mouth of the side canyon. As the lake has gone down the wire which was once underwater is well out of water today, creating a life-threatening hazard. Look at this picture, a boater would have almost no time to avoid striking it, as it extends 40-50 feet from the wall, and is completely unmarked. I'm no safety inspector, but you would think NPS would patrol the lake and be able to identify a manmade hazard such as this and address it immediately. Instead, I'm guessing they are writing people up for minor infractions giving kids rides behind ski boats in Padre Bay. If someone dies hitting this wire, I hope that the park service is held criminally liable.
I honestly don't know what is worse, that they will claim they didn't know about this, or that they knew about it and have done nothing to mark it... either way someone is going to get killed.
2) The trash left behind at Dangling Rope. Years of accidental and intentional dumping into the water have left a huge amount of trash behind at the old dangling rope marina. The park service needs to send someone to clean it up, or have Aramark clean it up. I'm not talking about the usual pair of rusty sunglasses that can be found at the old lake bottom below the marina, rather whole engines, outdrives, marine batteries, chairs, barrels, etc...
3) Buoys. Every year I report detached buoys, most of the time channel markers, but sometimes floating shallow buoys, etc. This year we saw two, one was at the entrance to dangling rope, uselessly sitting down a side canyon nearby, either it needs to be set up properly or removed. Hey, NPS, your 40-mile buoy marker has been detached for over a year now, we saw it floating freely just down lake on the north side from Dangling Rope, it’s quite dangerous with its metal counterweight and metal lighted top that does not work. You’re doing a horrible job, if I were running things people would be fired today for the total lack of competence.
