Lake Mojave

I have a great understanding and needs of Lake Powell, Mead and even Havasu, but not Mojave. Why aren't we sacrificing Lake Mojave for the betterment of each of the upstream lakes? Slow the water from Mead to Mojave, looking at the water database, it is currently 95% full.

I am sure there is a good reason, thanks

Lake Mojave basically serves as a big fore bay to even out releases from Hoover Dam so that they can be more effectively distributed to downstream canal systems, including the Bard Irrigation District and the Central Arizona Project. So it is basically a reservoir that re-regulates the river flow, and drawing it down would mess up the whole balance of water allocation in the Lower Basin.

When I lived in Kingman I would pick either Lake Mohave, Havasu or Mead depending on the wind. Stripers at Havasu can be hit or miss. Go during the week and watch out for boats in the main channel going 100+. I have done well launching at Site 6 and going straight across to the west side. Not the numbers that Powell has but have never had a problem catching fish.

Mohave is a beautiful lake, especially the north end. Again not the numbers of Powell but I have had days where we caught 50 stripers. Nice campgrounds at all three marinas plus you can stay in Laughlin if you want. Again avoid the weekends. It can be a 2 hour wait to launch/retrieve.

South Cove at Mead has the numbers that Powell has. You now have to launch at Temple Bar on mats but it is doable. Dry camping and there was/is a small motel at Temple Bar. The South Cove area is somewhat protected from the wind and catches have run well over a 100 especially at night to escape the heat. I have always caught fish there. Most of the time during the week you will only see two or three boats in that area.

If you look at the size of some of the stripers coming out of Mojave, woah! Something you will never see in Lake Powell. Once they reach a certain size in Lake Mojave they get a steady diet of hatchery rainbow trout, then they get truly monstrous.

rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon were planted in Powell in the late 60's into the early to mid 70's.we used to fish off the pumpout dock at Wahweap at night, mid winter.we might only catch one or two per night but at 8 to 12 lbs each the cold wait was worth it.
My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek, Colorado has been destroying western slope fisheries for roughly the last 10-15 years all in the name of preserving trout fishing (although they claim its to protect the 3 endangered fish in the Colorado river)
