I have a 6 year old little girl that has been wound up waiting for her first trip to Powell since last year when we told her she could go with me on one of my spring trips this year. Having never camped in a tent that part of the adventure and all the different fish to check off on her list have been all she talks about until the last month. We were 2 days away from heading down when the bad news came.
As a way to cope with not being able to go yet I got her setup with a high quality closed face spin reel paired to a black and pink Ugly Stik and every evening we spend some time in the front yard practicing casting using a hulahoop in the grass for the target. I spooled it up with bright yellow braid that is super slick and she can cast that 1/8 oz rubber casting dummy 150 feet like nothing. It's been a great setup for a little kid. Can't wait for her to hookup a Powell slam on that rig!
Bummer, after seeing this yesterday on the news I'm worried it doesn't bode well for opening Powell back up Friday. Seems pretty stupid to me that they were "surprised" that Gunlock, Quail Creek and Sand Hollow got overrun last weekend when they have every other place locked down.

The dow waged war on the lakers. No limit on lakers, set up gill nets. They ignored the fact that the browns eat more Kokanee fingerlings than the lakers. In 2017, I caught 80 browns in one day, some were 18 and 19 inches. Everyone of them was thrown back because of the quality. They were in horrible shape. I went to the dow meeting about reducing the possession limit of the Kokanee, To a total of 10 in possession. Instead, the dow only wanted to focus on the lakers. I tried to bring up the actual issue, which was the summer crowd from texas raping the fishing industry. Then the business folks at Gunnison were all butt hurt. They were arguing that if the dow started to conduct possession checks at the tops of the boat ramps. It would kill the local tourist industry.
When the dust cleared, the possession went to 10 fish in possession, with no checks. The lakers were the pariahs and a horrible nuisance fish that had to be destroyed. It is one of the reasons that I packed up and moved to Utah. That and Colorado has been Californicated.
