I have a 6 year old little girl that has been wound up waiting for her first trip to Powell since last year when we told her she could go with me on one of my spring trips this year. Having never camped in a tent that part of the adventure and all the different fish to check off on her list have been all she talks about until the last month. We were 2 days away from heading down when the bad news came.
As a way to cope with not being able to go yet I got her setup with a high quality closed face spin reel paired to a black and pink Ugly Stik and every evening we spend some time in the front yard practicing casting using a hulahoop in the grass for the target. I spooled it up with bright yellow braid that is super slick and she can cast that 1/8 oz rubber casting dummy 150 feet like nothing. It's been a great setup for a little kid. Can't wait for her to hookup a Powell slam on that rig!

Oops, work PC deleted my attached pic. Huluhoop in the background near the fence.
The past three years she has caught a ton of Kokanee and trout in Utah as well as quite a few river bass in Idaho but she's really ready to catch some walleyes and crappie at Powell.

Heck yeah! Peppa pig hat and everything. My Blake just turned five last Thursday. Got her a new life jacket, she couldn’t wait to try it out Saturday (she hated the yellow hand me down from Nixon). She’ll be nipping at Nixon’s heals here shortly.

fishing/golf with my daughter was/is one of the greatest memories for me! great pics!

and now my grandson... :)
She is my granddaughter but we've been raising her since she was 2 months old and adopted her so she's more like my daughter now. She loves camping, fishing and hunting. We've been doing the online hunters education training so she can start practicing with her pink Red Rider BB gun.
My son never did end up being my hunting and fishing partner so I'm hoping I'll get one more chance at it before I'm too old.

Get here to Mantua, while you are waiting! Worms and a bobber will work just fine for her, white tube jig for you. The courtesy dock is not out yet, so you will need to beach the boat to park. My 4 yr old daughter caught about 25 fish there last week some 12 in yellow perch, red ears, lg bass. I caught about 10 large mouths, in between getting fish off the hook and rebaiting. The only problem is that is what she thinks fishing is going to be all of the time.

You're a good man.

Thanks for the tip. I've got the boat all packed for a north lake trip and on standby just waiting to hear that the ramp is open so as long as I have hope it'll be this coming weekend I think we'll wait for that. Good thing to keep Willard or Mantuae in the back pocket though.

If you figure Willard out please let me know. That is the only lake I have fished that I cant figure out.

I only fish it a few times a year usually in spring before I start heading up the hill for kokanee. It's like Powell, different every time....

That’s great getting girls out to fish! My fishing buddy and I last Friday! She got to witness an epic crappie bite!!
