Electric trolling motors

I have a 24v ulterra on my 21ft Montauk. I like the terranova, but not the ulterra. I will probably start scoping out the garmin autopilots. I might have a better opinion if I had the 36v. Bigger is almost always better. I will say that charging a 24v system is a pain at the bullfrog campground. I actually bought a dedicated generator for the job. I can get about 10 hrs at 1.0-1.5 mph. If you are doing multiple days defiantly go bigger.

Update on the ulterra, they finally sent the 36v motor and as Squire advised I got the MK-3-DC alternator charging system. I had to tear the boat apart to get three batteries and the wires ran but what an improvement! We took it to strawberry and I couldn’t believe how much easier it was to fish. I used the kicker motor to push us and the electric to steer and I can’t believe how much easier it was to control. I ran it on 2 setting for steering control. The trolling motor kept the main batteries charged and the alternator went right to work on the three trolling batteries once I started the big motor. I know this is not a long test and time will tell how long I can go but after the first trial I am impressed. Deploy and stow was just a push of a button, I never changed speed on the electric, controlled boat speed with the remote for the kicker. It let me fish and not spend my time trying to keep us on track. I can’t wait to try it for cast and reel fishing. Thanks to everyone who gave me your experience, advice and opinions, I am glad I waited for the bigger set up. I tested it for speed and it would pull me 2.5 MPH. I do appreciate the input. See you on the water! Dave

Now that is is too late, what is it you do not like about the ulterra, that might help me prepare for problems before they surprise me?

and I thought I was happy with the Minn Kota Powerdrive 70 LB with ipilot on my 24' Pontoon boat. Granted I don't troll alot but I love the anchor option. Never ran it for more than a couple hours in one spot but was impressed on how well it could move my big sail boat around in the wind. I do have it setup to charge both 12V batteries on this 24V trolling motor while I have the main engine running. Battery space was my big holdup from even considering 36V (yes I have limited space on a 24' pontoon ;)
