Davey Jones Locker

A fish basket, full of largemouth, and Walleye. Last seen flinging through the air, overboard at approximately 30 mph
We lost a basket full of crappie, and smallmouth in Blue Notch. Little brother thought full throttle at full wheel lock at the end of a cove was a good idea with the fish basket hanging over the side. It's the last time I remember him driving the boat.

Speared a wave on blast off and lost all six rods off the front deck. Had to fish the tournament with my drop shot rod that I never take out of the locker.

Our dog bed. More like a couch really... fortunately the dog wasn’t on it... which is why it blew out. We went back to get it but by the time we got back (not 5 minutes) It was gone.

Someone got themselves a beautiful $100 dog bed that day...83EB7D2B-2234-4025-B0A2-B2460149C135.jpeg

We had just finished filling up our boat at the Hall's Fuel dock and I needed to cap a gas can. I had my wallet in hand from paying the attendant and was worried about accidentally bumping it into the water so I was trying to get somebody to put it in the glove box, but nobody paid any attention to me so I decided to toss it in, since it was open. It bounced off the windshield, which came back further than I anticipated. I immediately dove into the water to try to get my wallet. I managed to swim the 25 feet to the front of the boat in olympic time and caught my wallet as it drifted toward the bottom. Unfortunately, I forgot I was wearing my Nike sunglasses! Better the sunglasses than the wallet.

I have loved and lost three wives at Lake Powell.

Two died from eating poison mushrooms.

The third ended up in Davy Jones's locker.

How that happened you may ask?

She wouldn't eat her mushrooms.
Goblin
Note: Dramatization. May not have happened.

I was not on the boat, but a few years ago a microburst removed the whole top off our 73' houseboat. The aluminum frame, which was about 16' x 40', the canvas and 6 solar panels. It was last seen flying over away from the boat, over rocks and out of sight never to be seen again.

A 17' Lund with a merc 90 opti. Trying to propwash a stuck houseboat and didn't even see the boat, side tied to the houseboat at the bow. Instant p... test. Yeah, that was stupid. Another guy rolled our 23' chase boat in 20 feet of water trying to pull a houseboat off the beach. Prop torque. A cleaner used the bathroom on a 59' sommerset and the toilet handle stuck in the on position. A houseboat that big looks funny resting on dock cables underwater. technically not Davey Jones locker cause they were recovered, but close.

About five years ago I was swimming behind our four rafted boats preparing to untie for our return home from our October trip. The water temp. was cool and my fingers shrunk. My gold wedding band of 40+ years came off my finger and sank in about 12 feet of water. Numerous dives to the bottom by multiple people failed to locate any sign of the ring. Forced to leave, we marked rocks on shore with triangulation lines and took pictures. Next April, for our first trip of the season, we returned to Knowles Canyon with a cheap, $70 metal detector and the pics. With the water down 20 or more feet we used the pics and rock marks to find the general area. The first use of the metal detector resulted in a "beep" which I was sure was a discarded can or some other worthless debris. We took one scoop of sand, however, put it in a makeshift sieve, shook out a little sand and... there was my wedding band! After not wearing the ring for many years due the dangers of my jobs (electrician and firefighter/paramedic) I was overjoyed to have it returned. I leave the band at home now when going to Lake Powell.

we were at the san juan in a beautiful cove on the north side, sitting on the back of the houseboat I was bumped by someone coming off the roof and hit my wife, there go her prescription sunglasses..... her only pair and boy was she pissed. SOOOOO we got inventive, the glasses were in about 20ft of water, we got two big rocks, about the size of feet, I found a good sized bucket, we had our 12 volt inflatable pump and a 25' water hose. it was a good afternoon to realize that the pump couldn't keep enough air pressure in the bucket to keep your head dry at 20' (1 3/4 atmospheres) and those rocks tied to your feet took you to the bottom quick, but we got the glasses.

I lost my favorite pair of Ray Ban sunglasses in Willow Creek back in '94 or '95. We were all hanging out on the ski boat, leisurely touring the canyon. We came upon a houseboat stuck on its beach, so a bunch of us dove off the boat to help them out. I knew as soon as I hit the water that I forgot I had my sunglasses on. And, I never saw them again. Ooops.

Back in the summer of 1995 we had a rental houseboat anchored in Cedar canyon. We were listening to the Wolfman Jack radio show on a older battery powered box radio. The radio was located on top of one of those old white bench seats that covered the engines. I went to sit on the seat and guess what the radio went overboard and sank to the bottom of the canyon. Driving home we heard that Wolfman Jack died of a heart attack a little after that show! My family blames me for his death. Years later when the lake was very low, I went looking for the radio but it must of been picked up by someone else.

Huge flash flood up the San Juan over labor day. I forget the year but not the flood. We lost 5 gal gas cans, sun cloud sunglasses dishes propane bottle. We had to leave camp and leave everything there to get out safely. I went back 4 hours later with my sea doo and what was a 15 foot deep swimming area was filled to the brim with sand. We could walk on it. We dug through sand to find things but the items that was lower than the sunshade was under dirt. We have gone back several times but only found a bottle of pop.
