Crappie fishing North

Great catch Kevin! Thanks for giving us all what we desperately need. A good fishing report, and not all the speculation and doom and gloom. Heading down the 9th, hope we can find a few of those walleye you guys left behind!
Your welcome Coho975, and people like you are why I post, I know most people are like me on here, and want to see picture's, and a report.
Thank's again

I think realistically, angling in Lake Powell is not really going to affect recruitment of crappie. When #s are down, harvest is low. When the lake fills up and spawning and juvenile habit is abundant, the population explodes. Maybe in a smaller body of water angling could remove enough fish, but LP is too big IMHO....
That being said, I do not find the big spring time Crappies to be very good table fare, the flesh is very mushy....
Not trying to contradict you Wayne, I just think you have a soft spot for the crappie 😀

Got to Powell Wensday, on the 25th, it blew the whole time I was there, but with all the sadness going on, it was still a great time just getting away. There is nothing like fishing to clear the mind of the thing's going on.
Ok, enough of that. I got there by myself, and started fishing around 10 am. there were fish coming up everywhere, at first I thought they were Striper. And I'm sure some were, but then I started seeing them. And the most of them were Big Gizzard Shad, 3 to 4 lbs easy. So that was enough of throwing for those.
I started fishing for what I came for, and that was Crappie. I used a white 1/16 oz fish head jig, with a limetreuse Yum grub, tipped with a chub minnow. And slow trolled or drifted when the wind gusted to hard to controll the boat. I caught a limit of nice Crappie, but they were slow, and the bite was real picky. But sometime when you have to work hard for them, it is rewarding.
My friend's Jerry and Sue, James, William, and there friend Dillon, got there at 5 pm, the fishing had picked up for them latter that evening. The boy's fished from the bank, and caught a variety of fish, Small and largemouth bass, Walleye and Crappie, throwing crank's, and jig"s. I took Jerry and Sue out and we trolled for Crappie. It was a great time even in the wind.
Have a good one.
KyKevin

Impressive! Would love to have some of those slabs! Hard pressed if I would take a Walleye or Crappie filet, both are soo! good eating. Great report keep up the amazing reporting!

To me catching a crappie is like catching a lobster or a prime rib. I can't think of any thing else that I would rather have for dinner than a couple big crappie fillets fried up in cracker meal with some home made tarter sauce.. Walleyes are a close second. We target walleyes and crappie when the water gets 60 to 65 degrees in spring and fall. It's odd that we have never had a trip that we did really well on both species. It's usually really good for one and a few of the others. I think that there are a lot more crappie than people think that there are, especially in the north lake. They are just hard to find most of the time. We have learned how to catch our share, and I don't feel bad at all for keeping a limit when we can.

Hey KYkevin. Where in KY are your from? Go Cats! Can you pm me where to find those specs? I can’t wait to get up there. Sisolak has shut us down here in NV. Hoping more sane heads prevail in Utah and AZ

I agree with KY Kevin and Flipper. Keeping a legal limit of crappie should not be looked down on. IMHO it is not as big a factor in Crappie populations as the Lake fluctuations and spawning, rearing conditions are. I am not a biologist but I play one on TV, LOL, sorry Wayne, just being funny. We have been able to find and catch Crappie at Powell and keep limits over the years, we also leave a few for seed. We have caught them in places around Bullfrog, Halls, Down-lake, San Juan, Escalante and "up North". We have found some in spots that clearly others are aware of, and yet we have found some spots and never have seen another boat in the area. Timing weather and water temp in Spring and the Fall have been the biggest variables in finding and catching them, yes it takes some technique and effort to catch them, but that is the fun and challenge of it. I think there are enough pockets of Crappie that never see a hook, that when conditions improve they will reseed the Lake and the cycle starts all over. After years of seeming there were no crappie left, a couple good habitat years and they pop up again. They are great eating, but don't overlook keeping a limit of smaller smallmouth they are very tasty prepared the same way as you would your crappie. I love them too, and it helps save shad and increase the size of them !! Everyone stay safe and be well, we will get over this current crisis !!!

I reread the thread and I couldn't find where anyone was looking down on anybody for keeping crappie ( although its impossible to really articulate what you want to say so others understand your intent on the internet with a keyboard). Wayne had a simple opinion on his own practices that he posted that turned into something else. We can all agree to disagree but one things is for sure is we all want to #fillpowell!! I think I am heading down tomorrow to do some bank fishing!! I love this site and look forward to hopefully making a helpful post when I get back instead of a what not to do post.:ROFLMAO:

Im with Flipper and Kevin, the thought of fishing for crappie just does something for me, is my favorite fish. I love all fishing but crappie and I go way back. With the lake shutting down there going to be a banner spawn with all species and the shad will need our help this summer. be ready.
