We did see some, but not as many as I thought we would. But there are many, many large Shad. Do they spawn early? I've just never seen that many large Shad surface, like a Dolphin doe's. We were fishing a lot of 30 to 25 ft of water.

Gizzard shad are the larger size shad and the earliest to spawn. I doubt they were spawning yet but they do spawn in mid to late April. I would be fine with an early spawn which would give all fish more shad to eat. Right now stripers and bass look fat but it is really because they are developing spawning material which makes their stomachs look so much bigger than usual. It will be interesting to see how all the fish turn out this year.

Went back to the North end, fished for Crappie again. Repeat of the first trip. Trolled 1/16 and 1/8 th jigs's. Lime chartreuse was still the color, fished as slow as the wind would allow us. Fish were still scatterd all over, you never knew where you might get one. I do think the minnow make's a difference, but first trip last year we never had them, and caught fish, but they did'nt have near as many Shad last year. These are Shad fed Crappie for sure.
My friend Sue caught the most, and the biggest which was 16 1/4 inch, and weighed 2.3 lb, kipa big crappie anywhere in the US. We fished a day and a half, and caught 50, we usually catch some Striper and Smally's, but not this trip.
I know there is a lot going on out there and a guy get's up tight easier, but this is still the greatest and most informative forum anywhere.
Have a good one all.

Nice slabs KY! Looks like you found "my spot", ha,ha......... That area is my favorite part of the north end. Looks like I'll have to postpone my trip planned for next week again with the weather nixing me a second time this year. so far.

Take care and keep up the great work....

The great thing about Powell, I have so many spot's that I thought were mine. And I get there and see people, and they won't listen to me when I tell them to get off my property. LOL There are so many great spot's on Powell, we could never fish them all in a lifetime. Every year that I go to the San Juan, I say I'm going to hit that spot next year, and never do, just never enough time. But in that 60+ mile's, I know there are a lot of fish looking for some thing to eat (y)
You have a good one, hope your able to go soon
