Keeper of San Juan Secrets
Went back to the North end, fished for Crappie again. Repeat of the first trip. Trolled 1/16 and 1/8 th jigs's. Lime chartreuse was still the color, fished as slow as the wind would allow us. Fish were still scatterd all over, you never knew where you might get one. I do think the minnow make's a difference, but first trip last year we never had them, and caught fish, but they did'nt have near as many Shad last year. These are Shad fed Crappie for sure.
My friend Sue caught the most, and the biggest which was 16 1/4 inch, and weighed 2.3 lb, kipa big crappie anywhere in the US. We fished a day and a half, and caught 50, we usually catch some Striper and Smally's, but not this trip.
I know there is a lot going on out there and a guy get's up tight easier, but this is still the greatest and most informative forum anywhere.
Have a good one all.

How deep is the water going into White Canyon? Did you have to fight river current to get in?
John
When I came out of Farley's it was 6 to 7 ft, and I headed to White and it kept getting deeper, and I've ran that since 1997 you run up the middle with no worry of rock, no current yet, but I told my friend's the river had gotten more muddy from last week. White is really good color still not muddy at all, and Farley's is the same. I saw 37ft of water in White, that kinda surprised me, but it is still a big canyon. I would like to spend some time in there.

Sounds like a wonderful outing! Can you catch them all summer like that, or is it more of a spring time bite with crappie?

Did you see any shad schools? Just wondering where they are hanging out.

Wayne
We did see some, but not as many as I thought we would. But there are many, many large Shad. Do they spawn early? I've just never seen that many large Shad surface, like a Dolphin doe's. We were fishing a lot of 30 to 25 ft of water.

Nothing like river back water sloughs (canyons) for big slabs . Thanks for sharing, I hope they reopen the camp grounds by May cause I really need a Powell trip.

Wow, nice fish. I think anyone would be smiling while holding that fish. Thanks for the report and pictures, I hope we get to go back in the near future, I will be picking your brain for sure.

Cool

Have a good one
