Bullfrog Reports?

We were down camping in Halls Crossing Tues-Sunday (6-11th). We did not target stripers. The only stipers we saw were Jason and Landon's (Catchnabuzz), who were camping across from us. Wayne is right, (duh) you really need to wait for the water to be warm enough to catch warm water fish! Morning water temps were 48, with highs being 52. Fishing was super slow, catching smallies on main point channels/mouth of canyons (Stanton, Ticaboo, 4Mile). We caught our few fish using hula grubs, fishing slow in about 25 ft of water. We used worm tippers in hopes of enticing a walleye, with no success. We came home early to let the water warm and will be down again when it does.

Those fish are not actually ripe yet. The eggs will be green as they get ready to spawn, and them males will be a bit "spunky" ;)

One other thing I noticed from your pics: If you bleed them as you catch them, they are much less messy to filet, keep fresh longer, and taste better! I never used to do this, but have seen how it makes a noticeable difference when you filet them. I just whack them on the head, slice the gills, and throw them in the live well where they bleed out.

It was a beautiful day for a boat ride since fishing was slow. It was good to run into you and talk a bit. I'll be back in a few weeks, hope to see ya again up that way

Well even a slow day fishin is better than workin!! Hey thanks for the heads up and update! we are locked in for this week so we will give it all we got. We do want to target strippers! Of course a smallie or two is always welcome! Weve got the hulas and some crwdads hopefully they will like
The way I jig it!! I will report back soon!

The only action we had in 3 days was in water colored like the picture. It was hard to find but with some wind now it might be more available. Troll 3-4mph and try to get your lures into the zone that fish are on the graph. Best bite for us was in 35' mid day with the lures running about 9' deep. The fish were flighty from the boat and 95% of the fish came on the planer boards. If you have them, use them! I think we only caught 3 fish on the boat rods. Leadcore didn't even get a hit. They stay alive in the livewell with cold water temps. They get a thump right before i fillet them and the fillet goes directly into a tub with clean ice cold water. Fillets are clean as can be and great fish tacos. Vaccuum packed and most are given to my friends that don't know what a walleye is. For me, stripers are way more fun to catch than to eat but I take care of my kill and they aren't half bad to eat if you get the grease good and hot!

Better to dispatch them and let them bleed out first...just saying! I do the same with walleye, I slit their gills as am heading back to camp or the cleaning station, that way they are fresh but have bled out. I have done exactly as you do, and compared them to ones that I bled out, and there is noticeably less blood in the filets if you bleed them, regardless of whether they die in the livewell or not.

Ever since I started doing it at LP, I do to all my fish, it makes the fileting process cleaner and filets better.
 
Yup dorado, I used to be non believer on bleeding walleyes but now everything gets bleed, way cleaner filets and less mess at cleaning board
 
We fished North end of lake and had lots of fun! 3-14 thru 3-17. There was a bass fishing tournament this weekend as well.

1st day no fish caught. we went to Halls
2nd day we fished Moki canyon catching 1-Smallie on rock slide using a crawdad. And 1-Striper using a chartreuse rap shad in cloudy water in back of canyon.
3rd day we fished the colored water in back of Bullfrog and caught 3-stripers, 2-walleye trolling chartreuse colored lures and silver/blue colored shad lures.
4th day we fished back of Bullfrog trolling same lures and caught 1-striper and 1-Carp we snagged the carp while trolling!

All of the stripers were healthy fat fish. Walleye were healthy as well.

Fished bullfrog sunday the 18th to 21st , with my buddy Ramon for stripers . Sunday was white caps and made it to the back of bullfrog bay in the green water by 2:00 the fishing was great till 6:00. Monday went to halls creek to the back in green cold morning , fishing was ok . Lost a lot of lures to the trees. Tuesday and wed. stayed in bullfrog fishing was good till about 11:00 then just died till 2:00 till 6:00 it would pick up . Found schools in 25 ft of water off of gulches on the south side , tried to bait them and spoon them could not catch them .
Trolling worked with flicker shads , fire tiger and black and silver size 11 . The key was to tune them in so they would go straight and deep.
There has been questions if mussels stink , they do. Our generation has failed , lake powell stinks like a leach field on the shore line .
Came home with about 50 stripers in real good shape , and had a great time .
