never got further north than Moki, slurps I saw were main channel events near the northern Halls buoy field, and the gravel island in front of the entrance to Hall's Creek, lots of floating debris. Did not fish much.
Just got back and out of the shower, boy did that feel good!
Through the weekend the flotsam was really bad between Hite and 7 mile. After the weekend T-storms most of the sticks and logs have been blown to shore and the water level is just starting to drop.
We launched last Wednesday at the primitive ramp and as has been said, we had the Explorer in to the bottom of the rear hatch before the boat floated. We recovered this morning at the main ramp (dirt extension) and it was no problem. The base is solid and angle is very good. The courtesy dock it at the primitive launch with no dock at the main ramp. We talked to the park service maintenance person and he had no problem with people using either ramp.
Fishing!
Thursday and Friday we had boils in the main channel most of the day. Spooky and only one or two fish caught from each one before they sounded. Our best boil lure was a bucktail jig. Between boils we got quite a few walleye on the south bank of Good Hope across from the restroom.
The water is cloudy down past Good Hope but not muddy.
The last couple of days were pretty slow fishing wise but we caught some walleye trolling along the rock falls and a crappie at the mouth of North Wash across from the primitive launch. There is a large sand bar and the tops of tamarisk just popping out of the water. We were told there were walleye in there but didn't get any while we were there.
The fishing should pick up in the next week as the moon wanes. Our schedule just didn't take the moon phase into account.
We were the only primitive camp for most of the week with a couple more camps in over the weekend. Brush is not too bad and there are splintery picnic tables scattered along the beach.
The restroom is fully operational with running potable water but no air conditioning. The cleaning table is non-operational. The store is open for ice and ice cream bars.
There are no rangers on duty at Hite so all fees are paid with the automated machine next to the parking lot across from the store.
The dump station has fresh water available (it comes out of the hose at about 85 degrees).
We didn't come home with as many fillets as we wanted but the fishing was great.
Thanks Bruce! A little more clarity as we are heading down tomorrow. Boils in the main channel? Was this on the horn or down in good hope? Water sounds stained but very fishable? Feet wise to the floating bathroom what is it? Last report I heard was a heavy line at the mouth of Farley and then another line at the top of Good Hope? Did you throw at brush along the shore at all? Thanks for the great report!
Boils in the main channel from Trachyite as far as we went down stream
Yes the water was stained, less than a foot at Hite to probably 2-2 1/2 feet at the bathroom.
We really didn't see any definitive lines as we meandered along the channel just a gradual clearing. Watch for large flotsam still in the main channel, our pitot was clogged the second day out and somewhere at the mouth of Trachyite is a whale-tale (or pieces there of).
We are not really brush type fishers I guess just because we have never been with anyone that could teach us the technique.
Good luck and have fun, there is not much traffic at all above Good Hope.
Thanks again Bruce! Sounds like we'll have a great time. Water should be clearing by the minute now that runoff has stopped. We don't mind stained water!
Thanks for the report. Looking forward to Preston's report when he gets back. Leaving the 19th, launching the 20th. Heading south from Hite and shore camping. Blue Notch?
