Blue Notch/Red Canyon

My Mom's family lived in Paonia for a while in the late 60's and early 70's until my Grandfather was killed in a mining accident in August 73'. He was the superintendent of the summer set mine. Soon after they had to relocate to Idaho Falls. They have great memories of that area and would probably still be there if not for the accident.

came out of blue notch yesterday road is good for the notch , think twice about dragging your boat ,that road eats boat trailers(one with a broken off hitch halfway down .you can still launch if your careful .

My son is wanted to know if I thought he could get his 24' motor home down the blue notch road? He and his friend would rather camp out in it rather than a tent. I friend of mine used to take his 24' motor home down the blue notch road and pulling a 17 foot boat. His buddy would pull his 24' camper down as well. They would set up the camper and use the truck to launch the boat. They used to go once or twice a year - every year. Would take them a couple hours going really slow. Let me know what you think?

Really? Biggest thing I’ve seen pulled down there is one of those single axle pop up trailers. At the current water levels and the steeper final peak you need to traverse to get to the water I’d find it very hard to imagine a decent sized trailer.

Hey Flipper,

I have been down that road only three times, and that was at least fifteen to eighteen years ago. The water levels then where around 3660 best I remember. You could fish all day just in Blue notch. The kids Motor home is a mountain addition that has extra ground clearance. With out seeing the road for myself it is hard to tell him whether it is doable or not. That's why I'm on here asking for advice. My buddies used to do it every year. They would at times tear up some stuff, and they never went alone, always two vehicles. Back then they graded the road once a year during the spring. They almost always had to do a little road maintenance. He's wanting to go and take his girlfriend and 8 month old baby. He wants to be right by the water. Best I remember there are not any flat places by the water at this water level on either side.

I was there three weeks ago. I parked my truck 50' from water. Hauled my canoe from there. There were other campsites with vehicles but no trailers, only tents.

motor homes down blue notch thats a crazy idea , you might get to the old high water mark but not close enough to launch anything ,there is a steep rutted hill and steeper down grade on the other side did anyone mention the rocks that stick out from the canyon wall (there painted red for luck) i don,t take my 8 ft camper its to hard to get by those places not to mention scarier than hell if you want to take any thing down blue notch drive down your self first.

I have to agree, you won't make it over the '4wd hill' in a motor home.
