Hey Todd, good to hear from you to. But are the Mack's as good eating, as the Perch?
Are you going down to chase boil's? I'm going to go hear in August, I'm not sure, but probably to Hite. Hope there in decent shape by then.
Broke my old phone, and lost all of my contact's, give me a call sometime. Have a good one Todd.

In my opinion only small macks are worth eating. The bigger they get the more Fishy "Oily" they are. Kok's anyday over anything you'd catch in Blue Mesa, Perch are great eating, but about like bluegill to me, too much work for what you get unless you have a entire mess of decent sized ones. Walleye are king in my freshwater menu book.

Starting to see more boil/slurp activity at Bullfrog area, more in moring/evening but maybe just harder to track in middle of day with Wake boarders and wind.

Ponderosa campground in my opinion is the hidden gem of Blue Mesa for camping. It is up the Soap creek arm nestled on the west side of the mountain, less afternoon wind and the scenery is spectacular. Lots of large ponderosa pines and wild flowers. Very accessible with the rig you described and it has a launch ramp too. There is also another campground another mile or so above Ponderosa but is is not on the water.

Elk Creek, Lake Fork and Stevens Creek are open range with sage brush and camping rigs for your viewing enjoyment. Elk Creek does have a great little restaurant at the marina open until 8:00 pm. If you don't have a Colorado boat inspection tag and receipt you will need to go to Elk Creek to get on the lake.

If you make it into Gunnison stop by Gene Taylor's sporting goods for fishing supplies and the very best information on what is biting and what to use. They run several fishing guides out of the store and are very knowledgeable.

I was at Blue Mesa last week, lots of stuff in the water. We fished out of Lake Fork. Didn't catch any kokanee, but caught Brown's and Lake Trout. Caught most of the fish on orange squid's and a green Arnie's.

I was there yesterday. Seen lots of kokes on the sonar, but were more finicky than usual. They will appear as bright orange on sonar, so i.d. is pretty easy. Trolling speed seemed to be a bigger factor than lure color. Had two hookups only, and lost both at the boat. Many people i talked too, never even had any strikes.
I started out at 1.8 to 2.0 mph for the first part of the morning, then dropped down to 1.3 to 1.5 and had the 2 hookups. By then it was getting late in the a.m. and then no more. Had 1 each on hot pink and chartreuse arnies.
Depth of most fish seen was 40' - 60'.
Good luck!!

My favorite spot is the ponderosa camp north of the dam. The Kokanee fishing is great this time of the year. Go to the point just north of the dam. If want lakers, the area right across from the lake fork ramp and across the lake in between the two forks is great. That is where I caught the lovely 42 in girl that I am holding. Please put any of the 30 in plus lakers back. The dow has declared war on them, instead of the browns.
There are also some monster yellow perch in the back of lake fork. My biggest has been 12 in., if you find them you can catch 20-30 10 inchers in an hour.

No down riggers and left the lead core reels at the house. Fish were at 40 to 60’ today and couldn’t get down to them. It was a great day on the lake until about 3 ish when the “W” and the rain. I’ll get after them earlier tomorrow. AT&T cell service is REALLY MARGINAL at Blue Mesa. Sq

They spend a lot of money killi

ng "non-native" fish
Darn the bad luck this year, you might have to get up before day light when they might be near the surface?
I am headed to LP on a spur of the moment trip Friday through Sunday. Staying on the boat and going to enjoy the warm weather and the stars at least one night. Hope this trip turns out better for you than your last one! See you soon.
Dave

Do you have any 1oz. egg sinkers with you, 3 or 4 of those behind a swivel followed by a leader and bait with 100' of line out should get it in their face. Might be worth a try. replace2.png

Well I didn’t get skunked, caught 1 salmon today. Most all of the fish were marked at 49 to 65’ of water. Weather was really good until about 3:00 then we went to the Black Canyon NP. Everybody’s happy. Sq
