I've noticed something strange this trip to the lake. Mussel growth on the rocks at the current water level (3601-2) is nearly non-existent. These rocks in the photo below have been underwater for nearly a year and there are very few mussels on the rocks just coming out of the water - in some places zero mussels, in others, just a few on the underside of rocks, but overall, very few mussels are visible at the water level and above in any of the canyons I've visited. In the past few years, when the water went down mussels on the side of canyon walls after only a year, including Castle Rock Cut, have been significant. There is definitely something scientifically different than the past few years occurring. The water is extremely clear, and mussels seem to be fewer at least at current water levels.

I noticed the very same thing up at Wetherill a few weeks ago, meant to take pics but forgot. Definitely much more sparse than expected.

when i was at the notch i did not see many, then i was looking for crawdads underneath the rocks almost every rock was covered with tiny mussels depressing to say the least.

Have never seen any crawdads crawling around at Powell. Yet I’ve seen thousands in stomachs. So I know they’re in there.

GARRY the craws were in water to deep for me to catch , the mussels were under on the bottom side of the rocks , there were bigger mussels with the small ones , i wonder how thay lived under the rocks when it was dry , wet dirt or mud thay were to big to be new , can thay move or burrow i don't know . i'm coming down 3\13 lets hope it warms up, gotta be warmer than huntsville

We explored every nook and cranny of face Canyon yesterday from front to back - great day - and didn't observe a single wall or rock, even on north-facing and underneath, with more than a couple of mussels on it. Right now, if you didn't know better you would not even know the lake was infested. Seriously.

Afternoon water temps: 57.5 degrees. Afternoon air temps: 61.2 degrees

I wonder if a freeze might have dislodged them into the water. It would be great if they were unable to prosper in the lake, regardless of the reason.

Yep! Looks like the one that got tweaked during a nasty microburst. I would guess that it's headed for the recycle bin. It was one of the oldest docks in BF.

We just found out in owners meeting that was the J dock. We are now moved to the H dock. Are there any slip maps available that anyone is aware of? I would like to know where the boat is before I head down next month.

There are not up-to-date maps. Even the one that hangs on the side of the office is wrong. I think you're now on the other half (other side) of the same dock. L, M, N, & O are the larger slips. I think J/H were a pair of mid-size slips (second to the last, between L/M and N/O). No guarantees with this old mind though...

If you are wanting crawdads. Try this. Throw your fish guts in the water close to a small drop off. Get a piece nylon sock. Stuff it with chicken liver. Let the fish guts stay in the water overnight. The next day with the chicken liver tied to your fishing pole line drop it where the fish guts are. You should catch plenty. They are delicious to eat.
