What’s in a Name?

For some people, naming a boat is harder than naming a child or a pet. After all, you want to make sure the name fits, and is one you’ll equate with the boat, giving it a life all its own.

Typically, boat names hold deep meaning for their owners. Names can reflect a spouse or child, a profession or industry, a song, a constellation, a place, a time, a pastime, or anything that strikes your fancy.

Naming a boat is not without classical superstitions. For example, it is considered unlucky to have a boat name begin with the letter “O.” Boats that are named after women are considered lucky. Boats with “big” names are considered unlucky—Titanic, remember, wasn’t so lucky.

When you name a boat, whether new or old, a ceremony of some sort is definitely in order. Before a new boat is launched, people gather to christen her. A bottle of wine or champagne is used, as the ceremony leader invokes the protection of the wind and water gods, proclaiming the name of the boat, and breaking the bottle on its bow. The boat is then launched with great fanfare.

If a boat already had a name and is being re-named, there are certain protocols to follow as well. First, you must remove all traces of the old boat name—from the boat itself, and all the papers related to it. Once again, gather a crowd and a bottle of your choice for the naming ceremony. Pour everyone a drink (the boat owner should have a drink in each hand) and thank the wind and water gods for their blessing on your previous boat’s name. Then drink a toast to the old boat. Invoke the gods’ blessing again, formally announce the boat’s new name, and drink another toast.

Of course, there are several variations on the above naming ceremony. If you’re faced with your own naming or de-naming ceremony, do whatever works best for you. And always do the ceremony with those you love, and preferably your crew.

According to the Boat U.S. Graphics Department, the top ten boat names last year were: Aquaholic, Island Time, Hakuna Matata, Happy Hours, Fish Tales, Liberty, Seas the Day, Freedom, Ohana, and Summer Wind.

Some others I find humorous and original are: Even Keel, Fuelish Pleasure, Funautical, Hulls Well, Hypnautic, Jurassic Ark, Naut Home, Without a Crew, Wake Me, SeaZure, Superfishal, Squid Row, Buoystrous, Wetever, LunaSea, Moby Deck, and Pierless.

So be original with your boat name. You wouldn’t want your boat to be confused with another one. And make sure it is meaningful and represents your boat well. Below is a sampling of creative boat names here at Lake Powell. Enjoy!
