Wahweap 10/25 – 10/28
Friday fished Wahweap Bay area rocky shores using top-water lures. Steady smallmouth bass fishing with 1 small striper until 10AM. Fishing slowed considerably after 10AM.
Very healthy fish and great size!
Met up with the other boat in my group at Lone Rock to try jigging for stripers. Slow fishing but caught enough to keep us entertained. Best bet was a gold Kastmaster with a chunk of anchovy a few feet off the bottom.
Evening fishing again with top-water lures was once again steady for smallmouth until dark.
Sat morning repeated early morning success with top-water then moved into Warm Creek Bay for stripers mid-day. No luck in Warm Creek but the bass tournament was in full swing in the bay with folks flying around everywhere.
Sun morning again early start but with no success for smallmouth in Wahweap area. Moved to Lone Rock and steadily caught stripers until wind pickup up hard around noon. Very picky fish and hard to detect the light bite. Had to the hold rod anxiously and set the hook instantly when a slight pull was detected.
Mon morning Lone Rock striper fishing in the heavy winds. Lights out fishing for stripers using a gold Kastmaster with a chunk of anchovy. Catch was fast and furious watching the graph light up as my Kastmaster was sinking. I was able to pick up my lure sinking on the graph and would watch the stripers come up to meet the lure. Once the lines converged, set my bail and immediately felt the pull, very fun to have a digital readout of the fish attacking my lure. Maybe those ice fishing folks are on to something fun.
Overall: Smallmouth fishing was good in the morning and evening, not as fast and furious as years past but fish size was much better. Bass tournament might have made things a little tougher with so many boats hammering the shore for fish.
Stripers were very hesitant to hit lures and the bite was very difficult to detect except for Monday morning for some reason. Monday was hard hitting like years past. Fish are healthy and fat and fight harder than I can ever recall.
