Last set as I imagine at this point this is getting mundane and boring.

This was our camp. The keystone distortion in this picture is pretty extreme and I corrected it as best as I could, but it will never be as good as if taken with another lens. There was a lot of sand and wind blowing it around so there was no way I was going to swap lenses in those conditions. If you are ever in the four corners region and see a grown man crying like a baby. If he's holding a camera, then he probably tried to swap lenses in a dusty canyon and destroyed his expensive camera.
This was the area we sat for an unreasonably long time trying to boil water that wouldn't. We watched and waited and the empty cup I was holding to measure the water I needed to rehydrate my meal was only filling up with sand slowly. My friend ended up with a meal with too much water and the noodles in mine ended up crispy. That was the best meal I had all day.
The beautiful sandy camping area in the Esclante arm that's probably now gone underwater.

I had to look him up. Coincidently, we share a birthday. He was just born decades earlier, although it looks like he passed away in 2018.

Your friend is correct, no photo does CID justice. Must be experienced. But here is the shot I think you were trying for. At the end looking back towards the entrance.

Sea Bass, I’m curious when you found that kayak? It looks similar to one we saw way back in the end of the Escalante. My friend and I were fishing along way back in a narrow spot and came around a corner and there was this old man paddling out he passed 20 feet away. We were shocked to see anyone! We hadn’t seen another boat in 2 days! I said hi or some other greeting, he never uttered a word or broke rhythm to his paddling stroke. and disappeared around the corner. My friend and looked at each other and said was that real or did we imagine that we fished back out and looked for him. Never saw him again! We could not figure how he could have gotten far enough for us not to see him again!! We discussed it could be Everett Ruess still haunting Davis gulch and the Escalante!
If not familiar with Everett a great read, especially when at Laje Powell! Several books about and by him out there.

May 06, 2023. However, it looks like it has been sitting there a long time. It was a descent vertical climb to get to the kayak where it was tied off. You can see our boat at the water and then how far the kayak is from the water. There was carpet that was covering what appeared to be gear/supplies. We did not rummage through it but left it alone so I am not sure what was still in there.
All I know about Everett Reuss is that he disappeared in Glen Canyon long ago and has never been found. I will have to do some more reading.
Not quite, although I will admit that you did a much better job with that photograph than I did. This might upset some people, but the photographs where CID is filled with water and there is a boat there I find the most pleasing as there are more elements of interest. All the pictures I have seen don't do justice to how huge it is. It looks like you are also using an actual camera instead of the camera in your phone?

Ah, yes I do love it full of water too!! I have some good ones of my kids jumping off that waterfall last year (At about 3584' that was like just a 15-20' jump). I think I have some random ones of boats in there but none great. This pic and the ones at Gregory were all with my Samsung Galaxy believe it or not. I had a Go-Pro too that I shot some video with that day but the stills were on my phone.

Everett Ruess disappeared near Davis gulch. It is assumed he passed sway . His burros were found in a makeshift corral. Many theories as to what happened and stories say nothing else of his was ever found. I was told by a credible source that some of his belonging WERE found years after his disappearance and sold, the proceeds were sent to his family. The person that helped sell the items told me this and I feel he is very credible.
I was not meaning the old man in the Kayak could have really been Everett but we felt the weirdness added to the mystery.
Now back to the Kayak I sent the picture to my friend he thinks that is the kayak we saw the old man in
Looking back at pictures and trip info we saw him on May 20th 2023
Two weeks after you found it. I’m wondering if he stashed it and could hike to it to use it on the lake?!
I believe there is hikeable access to where that was?? Strange story and another mystery of the escalante river canyon at lake Powell.

It looks like you manage to use it to the best capabilities. Look like you did a panorama or stitch for the CID photo or does the Galaxy have such a wide angle lens on it?
I am skeptical it would be that man's kayak, but nothing is impossible. That kayak was pretty far up. I walked up there, and the sand was hard to walk in and there were tons of thorny bushes tearing into my legs if I mis stepped. It would have been miserable for two people to carry a kayak that far up. It would have been very difficult to one person especially an older person. In 2022 I kayaked from Antelope Point Marina in Lake Powell into antelope canyon. The water level was so low that we had to carry down the kayaks some distance to get to the water. Carrying the kayaks back up on return was miserable and difficult and it was two of us. That kayak was much higher than we had to carry ours. To me it looks like that kayak was anchored when the water level was much higher and left in the elements. If he carried his kayak up that high up from the water, then why did he tie it off on a rock?

Good eye. I did use the panoramic feature on it but I didn't swing it too wide from left to right, it's just there was no way you could get it even with zooming out just as you found out.

thanks for sharing ! I almost gave our group heat stroke wandering around in late June 2021 trying to find Gregory bridge after our visit to CID. Apparently it was indeed right there, just still under water. Fascinating to see the changes inside of CID. Praying I get to return to LP this year.

Would be interesting to see if it’s still there and also what water level would have been to have been for it to be floating there?
I’m pretty confident that is the same kayak or coincidentally very similar??
Cal immediately when he saw the pic , texted me back and said that’s the kayak that old man was in?

We both wanted to take a picture of the guy when we saw him but he was gone so fast neither of us ever did? Maybe he tied it off when water was high and then came back
No way to ever know! Strange story for sure? Maybe I should try to find it someday ….
