Tell your friends

I was in the grocery store in my Flagstaff neighborhood the other day when I ran into an old house boating friend. He and his X used to go out and beach weekly for a few years there a decade or so ago. They were great fun and loved the lake a lot. They were the kind who would get a great beach and save you a place, even help anchor you off when you arrived, good Powell buddies.

We hadn’t seen each other in a long time and after we greeted each other he asked me if I was going to go up and waste my time this year in the rock filled mud puddle that had become Lake Powell? I said yeah and he said that surprised him and that it must really be pathetic right now.

I answered and told him thats right, it does suck and it is way dangerous, tell all your friends! Make sure no one you know takes the big risk of coming to Lake Powell. He stared at me like he didn’t know what to say. I broke the silence and said look, the lake is still four hundred feet deep at the dam and one hundred and fourth miles long. I invited him to come along sometime.

I do miss some of the shine of a huge full pooled lake but I don’t miss all the extra hustle and bustle. The folks who are still coming are true believers and the other maybe can’t imagine what they are missing.

Yes, we just had dinner with friends we seldom see much. They asked whether we had seen a couple of our mutual lifetime Powell friends and I told them about our annual trip coming up. She asked how we could boat with so little water. I told her we’ll figure it out!
