We were in Lost Eden last Wednesday and saw these sponges attached to the wall. I asked the decon people at Bullfrog and was told that they did not know what they were, but they have had other people report them as well.

I have seen them before, I believe they are some sort of a hornet nest. When the water goes down they look like a sponge.

I also seen them in Lost Eden and picked at one, I think it is some sort of fungus. Sq

We saw them this summer in several places as well. Looks like they start growing underwater, then revealed as the levels drop.

I have watched freshwater sponges grow on the shaded canyon walls during rising water conditions. I do not know the specific scientific name, nor have I specifically studied them, but they have been around Lake Powell as long as I have. As far as I know they are not invasive or destructive. They are one more interesting species to see when at Lake Powell.

We have noticed them up in Good Hope in the Northern part and saw a lot near Halls last weekend. Many years ago we saw a couple of small, about Silver Dollar size fresh water jellyfish...never seen any since? I threw in a Milts Malt and Burgers ad, since the Sponge made me think of a hamburger!
