Spinning rod help

used the 17 on the gulf coast...reds and trout...no issues, breakage, etc...just make sure you have at LEAST a half ounce lure tied on throwing into wind, and throw directly overhand...none of that kevin van dam sidearm stuff, lol...dont know why overhand works (lessens twisting?) but that method is perfect for nanofil (and probably most lines) cuz the accuracy (direction, anyway) is on line, leaving just distance... (also, if i throw too far and it looks like it's gonna be in the bushes, i just grab the line and rod above the reel... i know this how? :) btw, the okuma rtx 30 weighs only 6.6oz! it's like you havent fished at all, it's so light! so i have one rod with the rtx 30, and the other with an okuma helios 40, both with topwaters (99.9% i'm throwing tops)...that combo of okuma and falcon bucoo is as quiet as a library! really amazing!

17 is a little overkill but to each thier own.
the 17 is so thin you wouldnt believe it...so while the number 17 appears to be overkill, when you get the line in your hands you'll see what i mean...too scared to throw anything less, lol...amazing line! and the 17 probably helps getting out of bushes/trees, etc...plus it's a good thing to have hanging onto a heavier fish, if you're so lucky! but it is super thin stuff, for sure!

I really love the Shimano Sedona reels, and I use a medium 7' Daiwa that is awesome, and I have several mid-grade Quantum rods, medium, medium/light, and ultra light. I have NEVER had an issue with Sedona reels. I run 30 lb braid, with 10 lb fluoro leaders. I think my Sedona reel/Medium Quantum casts the furthest

I realize this. Been using braid/nano for 10 years now. I actually find 6lb works very well for hucking and ripping metal. Its also finesse enough for jigs down to 1/16 oz. Its why reels come with a drag built in-

Interesting thoughts, again appreciated. In the past I have pulled in fish well over 100lbs on 20lb. Class tippet, and my mindset has always been to make sure I had a piece of tippet lighter than my backing, which for big saltwater fish for me is 30-45lb gel-spun, or you could lose your whole rig. Fly lines are close to a hundred dollars, and when you are in the middle of nowhere they can be impossible to replace. When I started spin fishing (and my new learning curve) I put on 20lb braid for Powell and I routinely use 15-20lb flouro leader for stripers. When you have 200yards on your spinning reel it is not so bad to break off and lose 30 ft. Whole different mindset. Since I won’t be trolling with this rod and I am looking for distance casting I went with the 14. I’ll know and report back in a few weeks 😎

i throw topwater exclusively (well, 99.9999999999%), and appreciate that nanofil floats, as well as all the other great aspects of this line...that's at least one catagory of fishing i won't be experimenting with (other lines)...now if i can just. stop. buying. lures. i. dont. need.

uh...i think it's called an overhand...you know when you tie your shoe? the first part is the overhand...i loop it around 2 times, cinch tight, loop another overhand 4 times, cinch tight, another 4 times, then another 2...never, and i mean never, had it fail...plus its not complicated, and with my adhd brain that helps...and if you throw topwaters i recommend a few: IMA skimmer in clear and 3/8oz...yamamoto 3" whatever color you can find...sebile bonga minnow in black on top, clear on bottom...black top can be scraped off, making lure virtually clear...and yo zuri (most are mostly clear). those have worked best for me here in texas and visits to oregon, and the few trips to powell... i have a skimmer tied on one combo for tomorrow, and a mostly black yamamoto on the other combo...yama has slits running along sides, with flashy stuff inside...really like the black, the white, and silver with black top...

I use the Palomar knot. But that is for braid to lure or braid to swivel. I usually run a floro leader I tie braid to a small barrel swivel using a Palomar, then tie leader to barrel swivel using the good old clinch knot. I just dont like tying braid directly to floro. If you use a barrel swivel dont make leader very long or it will get reeled into the rod guides and ruin them. . Don't ask me how I know--

I used to do this, but it ruined too many tip tops and guides! The only way to avoid this is to have a swivel too large to fit through the tip guide, which is pretty bulky. Much better to just tie on the leader with a good knot like the improved Albright or some of the other new knots out there for tying braid to fluorocarbon (NOT the uni-uni) :) You can cast this through the guides if you want, and it will not affect the distance. I have found the improved Albright is super fast and easy to tie, and while it not a 100% knot, I find most every time the line breaks it is from abrasion on the leader or the braid, not from knot failure....

Thing Ive noticed is when I use an Albright or other braid to floro knot when I get snagged fatally on the bottom the leader will break off at the knot. If i get snagged while using the barrel swivel 99% of the time the leader breaks at the lure end. So I can just retie a lure on, Knot have to retie the entire leader.

A little different topic but I had been using a modified Albright for braid to leader, had a number of break offs at different times including some good bites in hook sets. Switched to a blood knot and haven’t had a problem. A little harder to tie but worth it I think.

One nice benefit of the barrel swivel is virtually zero line twist in any situation. Even vertical jigging tubes and jigin raps which often swim in a circle-
It just works for me-
