Good day South-Enders,
We have been houseboating/camping on the Lake for over 20 years. We have departed from Wahweap many times, however we have always ended up North of Dangling Rope and so have no familiarity with the lower end of the lake. We are going on the Lake Sept. 3 for a week. We are looking for suggestions for good houseboat sites within about 20 miles of Wahweap. We realize we will likely be giving up some privacy but we don't want to motor 8-10 hours each way on this trip.
Thank you,
Johnny O

This is a tough question. It is like asking for the best place to park at Walmart a month before black Friday. And do you want sun sets, sun rises, early shade, late sun rises, wakeless camps, camps with view of bay, sand, no sand? Lots of variables. The poop beach is always a winner, complete with 4G LTE, but comes with snakes, awesome waterfalls during rain storms and lots of ego wake boat drivers... and poop. I suggest you send out a scout boat an hour before the houseboat. The best time of the week for finding new spots is about 9 AM-noon on Saturday. With that said, there is a lot available and South Lake is so big you can even find a great spot on July 4. Some of my toughest choices in life has been picking between two or three or four great camps sites at Powell. It is frustrating, just like going to a Chinese restaurant really hungry to be presented with a 30-page menu with 700 dinner options. South of Last Chance seems to be a magnet for absolute certifed idiots with wake boats so prepare for that. If you are in a cove extend respect by going wakeless when passing other camps. For uber private spots check out the coves S of 19 or S of Gregory or SE of 25. For Sunsets check out the W side of Face at 25 or the W side of Cookie Jar near 22 or the beaches on the right side after Maytag and before Laby. For good wind and water protection with a view check out the cove S of Padre Butte with the bathroom. For your own private Powell check out the two VERY private coves in Face. For the best sand check out the horseshoe cove on the left side 2 coves on the left before Gun Sight opens up. The sandy beaches of Face on the right side needs a mention for second runner up. The spot on the W side of the short cut between Face and Gregory is also great for sand. For vertical cliff overwhelm try the often overlooked beaches at the W side of the entry to Padre. For peace and quite and minimal idiot wake boat exposure avoid South Lake as idiot Wake boat drivers are like planets or grains of sands, too numerous to count. Even reaching to West reduces idiot count, but all it takes is one idiot and everything sucks.

I think it's funny that "Poop Beach" is now an (in)formal name for a very nice beach and that most everyone knows what beach you are talking about!

Bubba put together the best list of south end beaches that includes every beach that I could recommend with the only additions being ONE really nice sandy beach for one houseboat about half way back into Mountain Sheep Canyon (great if you are the ONE), and a couple of beaches in Dungeon Canyon that are still very nice decent sand with some small rocks. Both of these options come with far less traffic than the Padre area.
