I am pleased to report that UDWR has completed its May Sampling for shad abundance over the length of Lake Powell. I was nervous in May because of the clear water found in Lake Powell. To my relief shad numbers were average to above average at our sampling sites: Navajo, Wahweap, Warm Creek, Bullfrog, and Trachyte. Results from Trachyte were most impressive with over 2000 larval shad per 3 minute tow. Bullfrog in the back of the bay had 1000 shad per tow. Shad at down lake sites are usually less and we found 500 shad in Navajo and 100 in Warm Creek and Wahweap. These numbers are normal. We hope shad continue to show up well throughout the summer. Remember to go fishing often and Save Some Shad by harvesting striped bass and walleye.
