September… The best time of year on lake Powell.

Any day on powell is a better than anywhere else, but September days on powell are special… the best of everything in every way.

The water is still warm, the wind is calm, the nights are cool with billions of stars, and the crowds especially all the pricks in the wake boats and all the ugly beach bags are gone. The entire lake is alone and still, with every beach and shoreline waiting just for you.

Another wake less upstream with no destination in mind, gently floating into all the side canyons along the way with Fleetwood or Floyd, or the Eagles or maybe even a bit of Johnny Cash.

This next trip will be different, I have never seen powell this exposed, I am excited to see new things but also sad for the next generation.

Just like a Salmon in the sea, I always find my way back to Powell especially every September.

You da man,,, but turn music dwn just a tad.lol
Nothing like the solitude of a side canyon or even the channel at LP without all the noise and big waves from idiots!

Yes, September is the very best. For decades the last weekend of Sep was the target date for annual “guys trip.” We didn’t want to “trouble” the ladies when we winterized the boats for winter storage in Page. Great hiking weather, water temp refreshing but not cold, no crowds. Those trips were not to be missed, often about a dozen boats in the fleet. Boat gas was super cheap with 3 or 4 guys on board to contribute to the kitty, we traveled everywhere! The offspring who inherited the boats are less enthusiastic, but we still had 5 boats last Sep. Don’t know if there will be geezer space this year. 🤞🤞

For weather, yes. For peace and quiet…perhaps true up north but certainly not at the south end.

In September, heading up lake from Wahweap is always busy due to Labor Day crowds and the Lake Powell Challenge (Except for this year, canceled for safety reasons). In the houseboat, we have to get out before dawn and through Maytag by 8 am or it’s the heavy “Agitate” cycle.
