I had a great Memorial Day trip camping and fishing with @Chovyboy and his family. We left with three boats out of Bullfrog about Thursday noon and headed south. Things got exciting pretty quick when NPS pulled over the lead boat in the new wakeless area. ( Signage at the ramp would have made NPS’s job easier ) We wanted to fish green water and ended up finding a really nice camp just as you enter the bay near Piute. There was a world of difference in water color in the bay where it exits and where the river enters up past Neskahi. I went up one day just to see what the “head” looked like and to see if fish were hanging in the chocolate water. Got to where it was wall to wall silt at 20’ and fairly devoid of fish on the screen. Only saw one San Juanaconda but it was a big one. We had boils right in camp twice around daylight. Stripers were hitting last years shad. We fished the upper bay, Cha, and the canyons between. We had to work for the crappie but had success on really light swim baits. Water was clear in the side canyons and down at Cha. We ended up catching some of everything on this trip. Dinners were great and we ate really well. A shrimp boil, jambalaya, grilled pork, hamburgers, and a big fish fry the last night. Chovy’s two boys were a kick. They are good campers and were very helpful in all camp chores. They were just like a couple of otters playing in the mud and water. We stopped at Hole in the Rock heading home Tuesday. It would be interesting to hike up the cut. There were a couple of places where we had phone service on this trip and I was able to check in every night. Will go again, company was great .

Water temps were from 72 to about 77. Boils happened early mornings and late afternoons, in piute. The shad were plentiful in the colored water. Caught crappie and big bluegill from the beginning of piute all the way into cha bay. The water was clear enough in cha to cast at blue gills on beds in 15 fow. Could have caught as many stripers as you would want in piute trolling just about anything. The faster we trolled the more striper we caught. Walleye were hard to come by, and only caught trolling in 25 fow or less.
I cleaned a lot of fish this trip. Ended up with around 50 pounds of filets. Burned a lot of gas too. This was my first trip to the San Juan, and I’d say it’s worthy of the gas. Didn’t see any of those crocodiles everyone talks about, but did see some donkeys.
Tight lines!

Did you have many neighbors up there in the San Juan? We’ll be making our first houseboat trip up there later this summer and we’ve never been past the first few bends in our runabout. It’s a trek from Wahweap doing about 6.5mph.
Not many neighbors. We saw about 4 different boats that far up. I got about a 1/2 mile from the narrows and turned around at 20’

@Chovyboy its good you didn't see the croc's, they eat boat and all when they show up, they are why most people don't go there! 😉
That may be your "new' spot? You don't get to visit with folks as much down there like up North but it is peaceful! I'm headed there at the end of June with my SIL and grandkids, really looking forward to it! Glad you all had a good trip. Surprised you had not been there before too. I can't imagine having you and @Littlesaltwash cooking in the same camp, that would be special for sure! Thanks for the report and pictures.
