An immature fish that did not spawn this spring is developing eggs to be used next spring. Also, adult smallmouth bass do not completely evacuate the entire ovary each time they spawn. A female may spawn as many as 5 times each spring depositing about a 500 - 1,000 eggs during each spawning event. Eggs not spawned due to environmental changes like rapidly increasing temperature, water level or a host of other things may curtail spawning the closer it gets to summer temperatures. Remember, we went from cool to hot in about a week near the end of June. It is not uncommon to see eggs in the ovaries during the summer and fall.
