There is a link to the full article that is actually pretty cool reading. One of the things they talk about is the tidal wave that occurs when a big rock breaks loose. This is a quote from the document, "In June 1974, a large rock slab released from a Navajo Sandstone cliff in the main channel of Lake Powell near Iceberg Canyon. The resulting displacement wave lifted a boat anchored across the main channel and deposited it 40 feet from the shoreline." I read that and thought how I'd explain that to my houseboat partners!

The other thing that was really fascinating is the photographs showing seams in the rock that aren't visible from eye level.

They even have a photo showing a whole series of rockfalls caused by an earthquake. Good thing the article says Powell isn't really in a big earthquake zone (although there is certainly evidence and documentation that they occur).

Great article, gznokes, thanks. Often wondered if the rising water increased the % of rock slides.

and relatively few accidents, considering visitor count......but definitely unforgiving.

my dad would say: When your numbers up, your number is up!
 
I appreciate the paper, gznokes! Yet another thing I need to worry about when picking a spot... I have parked in some of those talus fields before and not considered the potential for new rock fall. I guess everything we anchor to had to come from somewhere.
